A 44-year-old software professional from Hyderabad<\/a> was rescued from cybercriminals<\/a> after being under “digital arrest<\/a>” for over 24 hours. The victim managed to escape early Sunday without losing any money. His ordeal began late Friday night when he received text messages claiming his Aadhaar number was linked to a money laundering<\/a> case, a TOI report stated.<\/p>\n

Victim Follows Scammers’ Instructions<\/h2>\n

The trouble started when the victim ignored initial text messages, considering them spam. However, at 3 am on Saturday, he received a call from fraudsters<\/a> pretending to be FedEx agents and then police officers. They informed him of an alleged link to a money laundering case and insisted he stay on a WhatsApp video call to verify his account.<\/p>\n

Following their instructions, he left his home in Miyapur around 4 am. He told his wife and young son he had an emergency meeting with his boss at a hotel. The scammers threatened him with legal repercussions for his family if he did not comply.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey told him the procedure would continue until Monday when banks open for operations. Then he could make an RTGS payment<\/a> from his account for verification and be released,\u201d a police officer said.<\/p>\n

Call Drops Lead to Rescue<\/h2>\n

The situation continued until early Sunday morning when the call abruptly dropped. Seizing the opportunity, the victim contacted the Hyderabad cyber crime helpline<\/a> at 8712665171. Constable Mokthala Ganesh answered the call and kept him engaged for over an hour until his family arrived at the lodge to rescue him.

\u201cWhen I heard his voice, I realized he had fallen into the trap of cyber criminals. He was very scared. To ensure he did not break down or resort to some extreme step, I kept talking to him on my personal mobile,\u201d Ganesh recounted. He also coordinated with the victim\u2019s neighbor to alert the family.Once his family arrived, the victim thanked Ganesh for his help, stating it was due to his guidance that he did not lose any money.<\/p>\n

Victim Shares Experience<\/h2>\n

The victim described the fear and confusion he experienced during the ordeal. He had to keep his phone plugged into a charger, unable to disconnect the video call even while going to the restroom. \u201cThough the call did get disconnected a couple of times, the fraudsters called back. It was only on Sunday morning that I managed to reach the cyber crime cops,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Cybercrime ACP RG Siva Maruthi and other police officials praised Ganesh for his quick response. \u201cWe respond immediately to such incidents and assist victims. We also urge people not to give in to the demands of such fraudsters and stay alert,\u201d Siva Maruthi said.<\/p>\n

Rising Cases of Digital Arrests<\/h2>\n

This incident is part of a growing trend of digital arrests in Hyderabad. In October 2024, a pilot lost \u20b97 lakh to a similar scheme. In May 2024, a woman architect was released after paying \u20b960 lakh to scammers. In March 2024, a PhD scholar at IIT Hyderabad fell victim to digital arrest, losing \u20b930 lakh.<\/p><\/div>\n
