Pic: Luke Auld-Thomas\/Antiquity Publications<br \/>\n        <\/span><br \/>\n      <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p>&#8220;We didn&#8217;t just find rural areas and smaller settlements,&#8221; Mr Auld-Thomas said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We also found a large city with pyramids right next to the area&#8217;s only highway, near a town where people have been actively farming among the ruins for years.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The government never knew about it; the scientific community never knew about it,&#8221; and he predicted, &#8220;there&#8217;s a lot more to be discovered&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>Last year a Mexican team <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/news.sky.com\/story\/explorers-discover-monumental-and-ancient-mayan-city-in-southern-mexico-jungle-12906887\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">found an ancient Mayan city<\/a><\/strong> thought to date back to 1,000AD in the same region.<\/p>\n<p>But unlike the US researchers, that group did not benefit from lidar technology.
