But each trial has its own distinct storyline to follow.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cloikoipp00073b6iycx021wg@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Here\u2019s an updated list of developments in Trump\u2019s very complicated set of court cases, beginning with a quick historical note about former presidents as witnesses in their own defense.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cloiqf4wn000c3b6if3yexc0t@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            When Trump takes the stand in his New York civil fraud trial Monday, it won\u2019t be the first time a former president will have given testimony in his own defense in a lawsuit.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cloiu9n2000013b6ioddrglp1@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Teddy Roosevelt did it twice more than a hundred years ago, both when he sued a Michigan newspaper that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mlive.com\/public-interest\/2023\/08\/that-time-a-former-president-sued-a-michigan-newspaper-and-won.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">accused him of being a drunk<\/a> and later when he was sued by a fellow New York Republican whom Roosevelt had called a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnyhistory.org\/2015\/05\/theodore-roosevelt-trial\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">corrupt political boss<\/a>.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cloiqaxg700073b6ittec3nua@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Roosevelt won both cases. Trump, by contrast, has already been found liable for fraud by the judge in New York.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cloinvepn00253b6ixbu5l2jp@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Those Roosevelt trials, separated by two years, were each sensational at the time, and they came after Roosevelt\u2019s final campaign for the White House, when he placed second to Democrat Woodrow Trump, on the other hand, is very much still in the arena, and his legal strategy in a slew of civil and criminal cases is tied to his concurrent presidential campaign. He has argued that two gag orders \u2013 the one issued against him by a federal judge in Washington, DC, and the other <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2023\/11\/03\/politics\/trump-gag-order-engoron-clerk\/index.html#:~:text=In%20a%20written%20order%20Friday,or%20outside%20of%20the%20courtroom.\">by the civil trial judge<\/a> in New York \u2013 hinder his ability to speak as a candidate.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cloikoipq00093b6irrbsgc4c@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The civil fraud trial, unlike Trump\u2019s criminal indictments, does not carry the danger of a felony conviction and jail time, but it could very well cost him some of his most prized possessions, including Trump Tower.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cloikoipq000a3b6ir97yq15s@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            New York Attorney General Letitia James brought the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2022\/09\/21\/politics\/letitia-james-trump-lawsuit-takeaways-what-to-know\/index.html\">$250 million lawsuit<\/a>\u00a0in September 2022, alleging that Trump and his co-defendants committed repeated fraud in inflating assets on financial statements to get better terms on commercial real estate loans and insurance policies.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cloikoipq000b3b6i3hy4y8mp@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Judge Arthur Engoron\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2023\/09\/26\/politics\/trump-organization-business-fraud\/index.html\">has already ruled<\/a>\u00a0that Trump and his adult sons are liable for fraud for inflating the value of his golf courses, hotels and homes on financial statements to secure loans.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cloikoipq000c3b6iiiuwnq53@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Trump\u2019s adult sons, Donald Jr. and Eric, gave at-times <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2023\/11\/02\/politics\/takeaways-eric-donald-trump-fraud-trial\/index.html\">tense testimony<\/a> in which they deflected blame to accountants for inflating the company\u2019s assets. A higher court in New York <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2023\/11\/02\/politics\/ivanka-trump-testimony-appeal-school-week\/index.html\">rejected Ivanka Trump\u2019s attempt<\/a> to delay Engoron\u2019s order for her forthcoming testimony because she didn\u2019t want to leave Florida to travel to New York while her children are in school.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cloirlg0x000x3b6ivmoogdhl@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The trial portion of the case is meant to assess what damages will be levied against Trump and how Engoron\u2019s decision to strip Trump of his New York business licenses will play out. In addition to the high-profile testimony by Trump family members, the judge has also issued a gag order on the former president and on Friday <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2023\/11\/03\/politics\/trump-gag-order-engoron-clerk\/index.html\">expanded it to his attorneys<\/a>, after Trump criticized a clerk of the court.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cloivar1s00053b6ip0iecu9n@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The government watchdog group Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington brought a case\u00a0on behalf of six Colorado voters\u00a0in an attempt to disqualify Trump from Colorado\u2019s primary and general election ballots. They argue he\u00a0is disqualified\u00a0by\u00a0the 14th Amendment of the Constitution\u2019s \u201cinsurrectionist ban\u201d\u00a0by instigating the January 6, 2021,\u00a0attack.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cloirsadz00133b6ihfs5t08x@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            A judge in Colorado\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2023\/11\/01\/politics\/colorado-14th-amendment-trump-day-three-takeaways\/index.html\">heard detailed testimony<\/a>\u00a0from legal scholars,\u00a0January 6 rally organizers, Capitol Police officers and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2023\/10\/30\/politics\/takeaways-trump-14th-amendment-trial-colorado\/index.html\">House lawmakers<\/a>\u00a0over the past week. Jean Carroll in a luxury department store dressing room in the mid-1990s and awarded her about $5 million.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cloikoipq000f3b6ipxerrz8u@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            A separate\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2023\/09\/06\/politics\/e-jean-carroll-trump-defamation-lawsuit\/index.html\">civil defamation lawsuit<\/a>\u00a0will need to decide only how much money Trump has to pay her. He was\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2023\/04\/19\/politics\/allen-weisselberg-released-rikers\/index.html\">released<\/a>\u00a0after serving four months in jail at Rikers Island.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cloiwx16j000i3b6i23lkrzfi@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Weisselberg testified at the New York civil fraud trial in October, but <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/trump-trial-allen-weisselberg-testimony\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">didn\u2019t recall much<\/a> about the creation of the financial statements at the core of that trial.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cloikoips001c3b6ilf4nkp4g@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Several members of the US Capitol Police and Washington, DC, Metropolitan Police\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2022\/08\/02\/politics\/capitol-police-trump-mehta\/index.html\">are suing Trump<\/a>, saying his words and actions incited the 2021 riot.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cloikoips001d3b6iwea9wkmh@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The various cases accuse Trump of directing assault and battery; aiding and abetting assault and battery; and violating Washington laws that prohibit the incitement of riots and disorderly conduct.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cloikoips001f3b6i44kdd9ru@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Some of the lawsuits have been put on hold while a federal appeals court considers whether Trump had absolute immunity as the sitting president.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cloikoips001h3b6ikeydfno1@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Former top FBI counterintelligence official Peter Strzok,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2018\/08\/13\/politics\/peter-strzok-fired-fbi\/index.html\">who was fired<\/a>\u00a0in 2018 after the revelation that he criticized Trump in text messages,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2019\/08\/06\/politics\/peter-strzok-sues-back-pay-job-trump\/index.html\">sued<\/a>\u00a0the Justice Department, alleging he was terminated improperly.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cloikoips001i3b6i5xaktae3@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Trump sat for a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2023\/10\/17\/politics\/trump-peter-strzok-lisa-page-deposition\/index.html\">deposition<\/a> under oath in the lawsuit in October.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cloikoipt001r3b6ifxljr36n@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Trump\u2019s former lawyer Cohen sued Trump, former Attorney General William Barr and others, alleging they put him back in jail to prevent him from promoting his upcoming book while\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2020\/07\/23\/politics\/michael-cohen-will-be-released\">under home confinement<\/a>.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cloikoipt001t3b6iseccaccu@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            A federal judge\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2022\/11\/14\/politics\/michael-cohen-retaliation-lawsuit-trump-dismissed\">threw out the lawsuit<\/a>\u00a0in November 2022. Trump is still suing his niece Mary Trump for disclosure of the tax documents.
