Over 70 per cent of these seats have been reduced since 2020, leading to layoffs and pay cuts for professors with years of experience. As a result, some now work as delivery drivers or street vendors to make ends meet, reported Nirupa Vatyam in a TOI report.

Dramatic Shift in Engineering Education
Currently, Telangana has 86,943 engineering seats, predominantly in computer science and allied fields, which account for 61,587 seats. In contrast, core engineering branches like civil and mechanical engineering offer only about 7,458 seats combined, while electrical and electronics branches provide a mere 4,751 seats. Approximately 25 per cent of these seats remain vacant each year. This shift in focus from traditional engineering disciplines to emerging fields such as AI, data science, and cybersecurity has prompted many of the state’s 175 B Tech colleges to cut core engineering seat strength by 50 per cent to 75 per cent.

Faculty Facing Financial Hardships
The reduction in core engineering seats has resulted in many faculty members losing their jobs or facing significant pay cuts. “I quit when I was asked to take a 50 per cent pay cut on my already reduced salary,” said Achyuth V, a former mechanical engineering professor to TOI’s Nirupa Vatyam. He now works as a delivery boy, earning around Rs 600 a day, and takes on additional work as a two-wheeler taxi driver. Previously earning between Rs 40,000 and Rs 1.5 lakh a month, Achyuth’s income has drastically decreased, forcing him to find alternative sources of revenue to support his family.

Despite his efforts to secure a new teaching position, Achyuth found that many colleges had either eliminated mechanical engineering programs or drastically reduced available seats. “I found that many colleges either did away with mechanical engineering as a branch or reduced the number of seats to hardly 30,” he added.

Call for Government Intervention
The plight of the faculty members has raised concerns within the Telangana Technical Institution Employees Association. According to D Srinivas Varma, the association’s general secretary, many experienced faculty members are struggling to find work as neither educational institutions nor the industry are willing to hire them. “Faculty, who are in their forties and fifties with years of experience, are struggling to survive as neither academia nor industry is keen on utilizing their services,” he stated. An official from the technical education department indicated that changes might be on the horizon. Starting next academic year, new courses or seats will be introduced based on industry demand. “Even this year, we did not allow colleges to increase CSE seats in place of core engineering and restricted maximum intake in a course to 120. In coming years, we are going to be more stringent and have a balanced approach,” the official said.As the landscape of engineering education continues to evolve, the future remains uncertain for many faculty members who dedicated their careers to teaching core engineering subjects.

(With inputs from TOI)

Source link

A significant decline in core engineering seats in Telangana has forced many faculty members out of their teaching positions.
