The collegium had in January 2023 reiterated the names of advocates <a ref=\"dofollow\" data-ga-onclick=\"Inarticle articleshow link click#News#href\" href=\"https:\/\/economictimes.indiatimes.com\/topic\/saurabh-kirpal\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Saurabh Kirpal<\/a> for elevation as a judge of the Delhi High Court, R John Satyan as judge of the Madras HC, and Amitesh Banerjee and Sakya Sen as judges of the <a ref=\"dofollow\" data-ga-onclick=\"Inarticle articleshow link click#News#href\" href=\"https:\/\/economictimes.indiatimes.com\/topic\/calcutta-high-court\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Calcutta High Court<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p><!--\/article_liveblog.cms?msid=105115637&pos=toppotime:2-->The top court collegium had also reiterated the name of Somasekhar Sundaresan, also an advocate, as judge of the <a ref=\"dofollow\" data-ga-onclick=\"Inarticle articleshow link click#News#href\" href=\"https:\/\/economictimes.indiatimes.com\/topic\/bombay-high-court\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Bombay High Court<\/a> in January 2023. <\/p>\n<p>In November that year, he was elevated as a judge of the Bombay HC. <\/p>\n<p>People aware of the procedure to appoint high court and <a ref=\"dofollow\" data-ga-onclick=\"Inarticle articleshow link click#News#href\" href=\"https:\/\/economictimes.indiatimes.com\/topic\/supreme-court\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Supreme Court<\/a> judges said the files relating to Kirpal, Satyan, Banerjee and Sen are still pending with the government. <\/p>\n<p>In Januaary 2023, the Supreme Court collegium had for the second time reiterated the names of Banerjee and Sen for appointment as judges of the Calcutta High Court &#8220;expeditiously&#8221;, saying it was not open for the government to repeatedly send back the same proposal. <\/p>\n<p><!--\/include_growfast.cms?pagename=article&skipcss=1potime:2--><br \/>Advocate Banerjee is the son of former apex court judge Justice U C Banerjee, who headed a commission which in 2006 ruled out conspiracy angle in the 2002 Sabaramati Express fire tragedy at Godhra that killed 58 &#8216;kar sevaks&#8217;. Advocate Sen is the son of Justice Shyamal Sen, who was elevated as a permanent judge of the Calcutta High Court in February 1986 and later became the chief justice of the Allahabad High Court. Justice Sen also served as the Governor of West Bengal from May 1999 to December 1999. Besides reiterating the names of Banerjee and Sen, the three-judge Collegium had also reiterated the names of senior advocate Kirpal as a judge of the Delhi High Court, advocate Sathyan as judge of <a ref=\"dofollow\" data-ga-onclick=\"Inarticle articleshow link click#News#href\" href=\"https:\/\/economictimes.indiatimes.com\/topic\/madras-high-court\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Madras High Court<\/a> and advocate Somasekhar Sundaresan as a judge of the Bombay High Court. <\/p>\n<p><a ref=\"dofollow\" data-ga-onclick=\"Inarticle articleshow link click#News#href\" href=\"https:\/\/economictimes.indiatimes.com\/topic\/justice-sanjiv-khanna\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Justice Sanjiv Khanna<\/a> will take over as the next CJI on November 11, a day after <a ref=\"dofollow\" data-ga-onclick=\"Inarticle articleshow link click#News#href\" href=\"https:\/\/economictimes.indiatimes.com\/topic\/justice-chandrachud\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Justice Chandrachud<\/a> demits office and will have a tenure of a little over six months.
