India is set to emerge as a leader in the Global South<\/a> for artificial intelligence (AI<\/a>)-driven global governance framework as well as digitally-empowered public infrastructure, a top government official said.<\/p>\n

“We are a part of all the global bodies which are trying to address the issue of global governance, and India being a voice of the Global South is have that position to ensure that we are able to express not only our concern, but that of the entire Global South,” Abhishek Singh<\/a>, Additional Secretary, Ministry of Electronics & IT (MeitY<\/a>) told ET.<\/p>\n

Recently, the Oxford Insights study of more than 180 countries on their preparedness in using AI for public services indicated that most of the lowest-scoring nations come from the Global South.<\/p>\n

The findings also pointed out that AI is expected to contribute up to $15.7 trillion to the global economy by 2030 with the United States<\/a> and China<\/a> standing to see the most Gross Domestic Product (GDP) dividends.<\/p>\n

“AI foundational models are actually developed in the West, mostly the US. Some of the applications are being developed in India. So, the nature of AI is such that it requires a global framework,” Singh said, adding that India has been a part of several international forums working on the entire global governance framework of AI.<\/p>\n


Early this year, Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led government approved Rs 10,372 crore for IndiaAI Mission to deploy computing capacity of more than 10,000 GPUs and develop foundational models with a capacity of more than 100 billion parameters trained on datasets covering top Indian languages for priority sectors such as healthcare and governance.”We are very actively involved with all the member countries with regard to evaluation of a global governance framework. Bilaterally, we discussed it with the US in context with a framework applicable to other countries with whom we have friendly relations.”India’s AI strategy hinges on seven pillars that includes compute capacity, foundational models, application development, future skills, startup financing, and safe AI.<\/p>\n

Some of the countries in the Global South are watching developments in India closely. India is emerging as a global AI powerhouse led by initiatives such as AI for All and the National AI Strategy that underscore India’s commitment to harnessing AI for societal benefits, the Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship earlier said.<\/p>\n

“We are the chair for Global Partnership on Artificial Intelligence (GPAI) this year, where we work closely with all the 44 member countries, and are coming out with a framework that can be applicable across member countries,” the official said.<\/p>\n

Founded in 2020, GPAI is an international initiative TO facilitate responsible development and use of artificial intelligence through shared democratic values.<\/p>\n

India is also a member of the High-Level Advisory Body on Artificial Intelligence.<\/p>\n

“We are also a part of the G7 friends group, where issues related to generative AI are being taken up. The G20 was another forum in which we are represented,” Singh said.<\/p>\n

In September 2023, New Delhi hosted the eighteenth G20 (Group of Twenty) summit, following India’s presidency.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
