Quantum entanglement can link the properties of things at great distances \u2014 perhaps at opposite ends of the universe.<\/p>\n<p><strong>information<\/strong>: (as opposed to data) Facts provided or trends learned about something or someone, often as a result of studying data.<\/p>\n<p><strong>matter<\/strong>: Something that occupies space and has mass. Anything on Earth with matter will have a property described as &#8220;weight.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><strong>molecule<\/strong>: An electrically neutral group of atoms that represents the smallest possible amount of a chemical compound. Molecules can be made of single types of atoms or of different types. For example, the oxygen in the air is made of two oxygen atoms (O<sub>2<\/sub>), but water is made of two hydrogen atoms and one oxygen atom (H<sub>2<\/sub>O).<\/p>\n<p><strong>Nobel prize<\/strong>: A prestigious award named after Alfred Nobel. Best known as the inventor of dynamite, Nobel was a wealthy man when he died on December 10, 1896. In his will, Nobel left much of his fortune to create prizes to those who have done their best for humanity in the fields of physics, chemistry, physiology or medicine, literature and peace. Winners receive a medal and large cash award.<\/p>\n<p><strong>particle<\/strong>: A minute amount of something.<\/p>\n<p><strong>photon<\/strong>: A particle representing the smallest possible amount of light or other type of electromagnetic radiation.<\/p>\n<p><strong>physics<\/strong>: The scientific study of the nature and properties of matter and energy. Classical physics is an explanation of the nature and properties of matter and energy that relies on descriptions such as Newton\u2019s laws of motion. Quantum physics, a field of study that emerged later, is a more accurate way of explaining the motions and behavior of matter. A scientist who works in such areas is known as a physicist.<\/p>\n<p><strong>quantum<\/strong>: (pl. quanta) A term that refers to the smallest amount of anything, especially of energy or subatomic mass.<\/p>\n<p><strong>qubit<\/strong>: Short for quantum bit.\u00a0 It&#8217;s the analog of a bit \u2014 a zero or one \u2014 in classical computing. Classical computers encode data as bits, where each of these is either a zero or one. In quantum computing, data instead are encoded as qubits, where the two basic states are usually written as \u22230\u27e9\u22230\u27e9\u00a0and\u00a0\u22231\u27e9\u22231\u27e9. A qubit can be in state\u00a0\u22230\u27e9\u22230\u27e9,\u00a0\u22231\u27e9\u22231\u27e9. But unlike a classical bit, a qubit also can be in a so-called linear combination of both states. The name of this phenomenon is superposition.<\/p>\n<p><strong>speed of light<\/strong>: A constant often used in physics, corresponding to 1.08 billion kilometers (671 million\u00a0miles) per hour.<\/p>\n<p><strong>universe<\/strong>: The entire cosmos: All things that exist throughout space and time.
