Delhi residents woke to hazy skies and poor air quality on Saturday morning. The Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) recorded an average Air Quality Index<\/a> (AQI) of 358 at 9 am, categorizing the air quality as “very poor.”Two specific areas, Bawana and New Moti Bagh, experienced even worse air quality, reaching the “severe” category. Both locations recorded an AQI of 409, according to the CPCB’s Sameer App.<\/p>\n

The capital city has been grappling with poor air quality for several weeks. Experts attribute the decline in air quality to a combination of factors including agricultural burning in neighboring states, fireworks used during the recent Diwali festival, and low wind speeds.<\/p>\n

On Friday, Delhi also recorded “very poor” air quality with an AQI of 387. <\/p>\n

The AQI classifications are: 0-50 is ‘good,’ 51-100 is ‘satisfactory,’ 101-200 is ‘moderate,’ 201-300 is ‘poor,’ 301-400 is ‘very poor,’ and 401-500 is ‘severe.’<\/p>\n


In addition to the air quality concerns, the India Meteorological Department reported a minimum temperature of 18.3 degrees Celsius in Delhi, four degrees above the seasonal average. The humidity level was recorded at 98 percent at 8:30 am. The weather forecast for Monday predicts mainly clear skies with a maximum temperature of 32 degrees Celsius.Meanwhile, on Chhath Puja’s last day, devotees gathered at Yamuna Ghat in Kalindi Kunj to offer prayers amid thick toxic foam on the river, videos show.<\/p>\n

Thursday, the third day of Chhath Puja, saw devotees offering ‘Arghya’ to the setting Sun while standing in the water of toxic foam-laden Yamuna River, in Kalindi Kunj. People were seen taking ‘holy’ dips, too.<\/p>\n

Concerns over pollution led the Delhi High Court to reject a petition allowing Chhath rituals at the Yamuna, citing health risks due to contamination. The court pointed out the availability of 1,000 alternative sites for the festival.<\/p>\n

The bench, led by Chief Justice of Delhi, referred to a recent case, where an individual fell ill after taking a dip in the polluted water and was hospitalized, stressing on the dangers posed if performing the puja in the river was allowed.
