The International Road Federation<\/a> on Monday said it has written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi<\/a> seeking his intervention in enhancing road safety measures<\/a> to reduce the rising number of road fatalities in India through targeted interventions like placing two-wheeler ambulances<\/a> at national and state highways and making smart helmets<\/a> and two wheeler airbags mandatory.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe International Road Federation has written to the Prime Minister expressing concern at the growing number of road accident fatalities<\/a> in the country and has suggested implementing strategies aimed at raising awareness, influencing policy, and advancing road safety measures,\u201d it said in a statement issued on Monday. <\/p>\n

Citing the data of the ministry of road transport and highways<\/a> (MoRTH), showing over 1,65,000 road traffic deaths in the year 2023 alone, the Federation said it accounts for roughly 11% of the global road traffic fatalities. <\/p>\n

\u201cThis statistic speaks about the urgent need for coordinated action to save lives and reduce the social and economic impact of road accidents,\u201d KK Kapila, president emeritus, International Road Federation (IRF) said, calling for a meaningful intervention from the highest level. <\/p>\n

\u201cDespite collective efforts, India remains one of the most dangerous places for road users,\u201d he said, adding it is essential to galvanize public awareness, political will, and continuous engagement at every level of society. <\/p>\n


\u201cAs the leader of the nation and someone who embodies India\u2019s values and aspirations, IRF humbly requests the Prime Minister\u2019s support in promoting road safety initiatives,\u201d he said. Suggesting measures to enhance road safety, IRF suggested the PM incorporates road safety in his various addresses with emphasis on obeying traffic rules and reducing road fatalities.Besides, IRF called for support for road safety infrastructure<\/a> initiatives in the government-backed infrastructure projects that focus on road safety including showcasing the installation of automated traffic management system (ATMS), and better signages along various highways.
