A 1951 vintage Rolls-Royce<\/a>, one of a kind and custom-built by H.J. Mulliner & Co. for the Maharani of Baroda<\/a>, and ordered by India\u2019s first Prime Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru, seems to have played a pivotal role in the collapse of the marriage of a woman from a Gwalior royal family, reported ToI. <\/p>\n

The woman and her family claimed their ancestor was the admiral of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj and the ruler of Konkan. The man, whose father was a colonel in the army, continued the family\u2019s successful business of running an educational institution in Indore. Both parties gave differing accounts of how their relationship began, but it was agreed that the engagement took place in Gwalior in March 2018, followed by the wedding in Rishikesh a month later. However, one detail was certain: the bride was never taken to her matrimonial home due to ongoing disputes.<\/p>\n

The man filed a complaint against the woman and her family, accusing them of cheating his family out of a large sum of money during the wedding preparations. In response, the woman filed a dowry harassment<\/a> case against the man and his family. However, the Madhya Pradesh High Court quashed her FIR, a decision she challenged in the Supreme Court. She claimed that the man and his family were so obsessed with the Rolls-Royce that they demanded it as part of the dowry, along with a flat in Mumbai.<\/p>\n

Senior advocate Vibha Datta Makhija, representing the woman, told the Supreme Court bench of Justices Surya Kant and Ujjal Bhuyan that the woman was in a difficult position, as “in her traditional royal community, there is no practice of remarriage.” In light of the ongoing dispute, the Supreme Court appointed former High Court judge R Basant as a mediator to facilitate conciliation proceedings between the two parties.
