A 77-year-old retired engineer from Rohini, Delhi fell victim to a sophisticated digital fraud that wiped out his entire savings of over Rs 10 crore. The victim was held under digital arrest<\/a> for 19 days, during which scammers manipulated him into transferring the money under the guise of a legal investigation, a TOI report stated.<\/p>\n

How the Ordeal Began<\/h3>\n

The incident started on September 25 when the victim received a phone call from someone claiming to represent a courier company. The caller alleged that a parcel addressed to him and routed from Mumbai to China had been returned. When the victim denied sending any package, the caller claimed the parcel contained his Aadhaar card details.<\/p>\n

The call was then escalated to a video interaction purportedly with a Mumbai Police officer, who displayed what appeared to be an official logo of the police. “He told me I seemed to be lying and demanded my bank details for verification,” the victim shared. The video call was then transferred to another individual claiming to be a senior CBI officer.<\/p>\n

Scammers Tighten Their Grip<\/h3>\n

The supposed CBI officer instructed the victim to isolate himself in a private room, warning him against discussing the matter with anyone, including his family. “He showed me documents with my Aadhaar details and a notice barring me from leaving the country,” the engineer recounted. Fearing repercussions, he complied with the instructions.<\/p>\n

The scammers continued their pressure campaign by connecting him to a fake Enforcement Directorate officer the next day. “He assured me of help but kept me under psychological control. They had full control over my brain and body,” said the victim.<\/p>\n

Financial Losses Mount<\/h3>\n

From September 25 to October 14, the victim transferred \u20b910.3 crore in three installments, believing the money was needed to clear his name in a fabricated money laundering case. The scammers claimed the investigation was ongoing and assured him his funds would be returned once the matter was resolved.The breakthrough came on October 14 when the scammers alleged that the victim\u2019s brother was implicated in their probe. When the victim approached his brother, he was convinced that the entire situation was a fraud.<\/p>\n

Police Investigation Underway<\/h3>\n

The retired engineer filed a complaint with the Rohini district cyber cell, but the financial damage had already been done. “All my money is gone,” he lamented, adding that the experience left his family shaken.<\/p>\n

The case is now being investigated by the Intelligence Fusion and Strategic Operations (IFSO) unit of Delhi Police. Authorities are working to trace the culprits, but no breakthroughs have been reported so far.<\/p>\n

Rising Concerns Over Digital Scams<\/h3>\n

This incident highlights the increasing sophistication of cybercriminals and the need for heightened public awareness. Law enforcement agencies urge citizens to verify unsolicited calls and emails and report any suspicious activities to cybercrime units.
