This move, implemented from the current academic year, focuses on creating a “holistic report card” for students from kindergarten to Class II, prioritizing activity-based learning over written exams, a TOI report stated.

Focus on Skill Development and Well-Being

Under the new system, students are assessed on skills such as communication, active learning, and overall well-being. Traditional question papers are being replaced with project work, inquiry-based tasks, quizzes, and group activities to evaluate cognitive, emotional, and social skills, as well as physical coordination.

The initiative also involves multiple feedback mechanisms. In addition to teacher evaluations, students conduct self-assessments and receive input from peers and parents.

Collaborative Teaching and Integrated Learning

To facilitate this transition, schools are organizing integrated assessments and teacher collaboration. For instance, Math and English teachers design joint tasks that test skills in both subjects.

“In an English lesson on birthday parties, students might role-play in English while solving math puzzles, helping them develop both language and cognitive skills,” said Sheeba Thomas, a Math teacher at Rajagiri Public School.

Some schools have incorporated board games to teach Math and Environmental Studies (EVS). “We also emphasize healthy eating and physical fitness along with academic learning,” said Priya C Pillai, principal of Chinmaya Mission School, Tripunithura.

Positive Feedback and Challenges

The initiative has been welcomed by schools and parents. “Schools are realizing that early intervention can help build social skills in students from a young age besides reducing the pressures of performance and marks,” said Ibrahim Khan, president of the CBSE Management Association. However, experts caution that the approach requires sustained creativity to avoid monotony. “While students connect better with emojis than with numbers, there’s a risk of monotony setting in,” said Amruth G Kumar, a professor at the Central University of Kerala.

Plans for Expansion

Some schools plan to extend the system to higher grades. “We are also developing new assessment models, and the holistic report card will be introduced for younger classes in the coming months,” said Bobby Joseph, principal of Naipunya Public School. The school aims to implement this system for grades up to IX in the future.

This shift marks a significant change in the education landscape, with schools striving to create a stress-free and skill-focused learning environment for young students.

Source link

Many CBSE schools in the city are replacing traditional grades with emojis or stars to evaluate students’ performance, aligning with the New Education Policy (NEP) 2020 and CBSE guidelines.
