The surge brings the total number of stubble-burning incidents in the state to 9,655, intensifying concerns about <a ref=\"dofollow\" data-ga-onclick=\"Inarticle articleshow link click#News#href\" href=\"https:\/\/economictimes.indiatimes.com\/topic\/air-quality\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">air quality<\/a> and public health as winter approaches. <\/p>\n<p><!--\/article_liveblog.cms?msid=105115637&pos=toppotime:1-->Earlier this week, the AAP-ruled state on Friday recorded 587 cases of farm fire across the state. The total number of farm fires during the paddy procurement season from September 15 to November 1 now stands at 3,357 cases, according to Punjab Remote Sensing Centre data.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, Delhi Chief Minister and AAP leader Atishi on Monday said north India is facing a medical emergency due to hazardous air quality caused by stubble burning. Addressing a press conference here, Atishi said the BJP-led central government has been doing politics over the issue of pollution but has taken no step to check <a ref=\"dofollow\" data-ga-onclick=\"Inarticle articleshow link click#News#href\" href=\"https:\/\/economictimes.indiatimes.com\/topic\/stubble-burning\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">stubble burning<\/a> in states like Haryana, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh &#8212; all ruled by the saffron party.<\/p>\n<p>The Centre had urged states to intensify the implementation of existing micro-level action plans for crop residue management as authorities scrambled to avert the annual air quality crisis in the national capital. In a high-level virtual meeting co-chaired by Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan and Environment Minister Bhupender Yadav, states were encouraged to maximise the use of over 300,000 crop residue management machines that have been distributed to farmers with government subsidies.<\/p>\n<p>The apex court had also slammed the Punjab government in October for not proceeding against farmers indulging in stubble burning, a major cause for pollution and declining air standards in the Delhi-NCR region.<\/p>\n<p><!--\/include_growfast.cms?pagename=article&skipcss=1potime:2--><br \/>The top court observed that Punjab and Haryana have only exacted nominal compensation from farmers found burning stubble.Meanwhile, Punjab recorded a total of 36,663 farm fires in 2023.
