The cherry on the top was the fact this was the R&B band’s Farewell Tour. In a breathtaking moment, in the misty late-night air, international pop sensation Lucas took to the stage as well, with Indian singer-songwriter Jasleen Royal closing day one with great fervour.

Earlier, Queen Sensation (a global Queen tribute band) paid homage to the Freddie-Mercury led rock band.

However, day one would have been incomplete without the performances of Shillong’s iconic blues-rock band, The Great Society, and household names Jessie Lyngdoh and Rito Riba. On day two, Meghalaya’s home-grown music stars, including Khasi Bloodz and SK Korn, added distinctive tones, showcasing musical diversity and representing local talent.

Indeed, it is this representation of local voices that was an undertone of the festival and its boundless energy and spirit, which DoNER Minister Shri Jyotiraditya Scindia recognised as unmatched in India, referring to Meghalaya as the “music capital of the country.” He lauded the efforts of the government and the people of Meghalaya, saying, “Hats off to Conrad; hats off to you all (the people of Meghalaya)”.

Meghalaya Grassroots Music Project
A festival such as the Cherry Blossom Festival 2024 blends music and tourism in a synergy that promises to leapfrog the Meghalaya growth story. However, beyond the staggering number of tourists lies a vision of the Chief Minister of Meghalaya, Conrad K Sangma—a music practitioner, who was once part of a band, and is familiar with the “struggles” and challenges of young, budding artists—to provide a platform to aspiring artists and musicians of the state and nurture them by empowering them economically. This is aligned with the overarching theme of boosting economic growth on the twin pillars of music and tourism.

The Meghalaya Grassroots Music Project (MGMP), officially launched by Sangma in 2022, is dedicated to discovering, supporting, and showcasing the state’s musical talent. Towards this end, MGMP offers platforms for street performances, music cafes, and curated music events. Artists are paid for cafe gigs and performances in tourist spots. Financial support for artists is one of the primary objectives of this initiative, which also allows young and aspiring musicians to hone their skills and cultivate confidence in their brand of music.

Siew Lyngdoh specialises in pop and Khasi songs, while Elena Sohktung in both pop and Bollywood. Both Lyngdoh and Sohktung were discovered by MGMP. Lyngdoh, who earns anything from 10,000 to 12,000 rupees on an average for an hour-long street performance, says MGMP enables artists like him to showcase their talent. Sohktung, who has also performed at weddings, says the earning potential shoots up for cafe gigs and festival performances.

Lyngdoh grew up in a church and started performing gigs early on. Both Lyngdoh and Sohktung affirm that the “lockdown” proved to be a turning point, as amateur musicians started launching their own YouTube channels and Instagram accounts and soon started to be discovered by MGMP. Social media, they added, have aided this process of discovery.

This music-nurturing initiative supports budding artists and bands not only from Shillong but also from other parts of Meghalaya, including Sorang and Tura, among others. Lyngdoh and Sohktung performed at the Shillong Literary Festival 2024 in Ward’s Lake.

Going forward, MGMP also plans to expand its scope to include studios for artists. Last but not least, it has already tied up with Hard Rock Cafes throughout the country to offer MGMP-onboarded gigs.

Source link

With the “Year of Legends” theme, the Cherry Blossom Festival 2024 hosted Akon.
