They are &#8220;only a heartbeat away&#8221; from assuming the Oval Office if the sitting president dies suddenly &#8211; as happened when Lyndon Johnson was sworn in immediately after John F Kennedy&#8217;s assassination &#8211; or resigns, as with Richard M Nixon and Gerald Ford.<\/p>\n<p>There is no guarantee that they will be elected in their own right after years as a frustrated and overlooked number two: George HW Bush and <a href=\"https:\/\/news.sky.com\/topic\/joe-biden-7848\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Joe Biden<\/strong><\/a> made the transition to the White House at a subsequent election, while Al Gore and <a href=\"https:\/\/news.sky.com\/topic\/kamala-harris-8862\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Kamala Harris<\/strong><\/a> did not.<\/p>\n<div class=\"sdc-article-widget sdc-article-image\">\n<figure class=\"sdc-article-image__figure\">\n<div class=\"sdc-article-image__wrapper\" data-aspect-ratio=\"16\/9\"><\/div><figcaption class=\"ui-media-caption\">\n        <span class=\"u-hide-visually\">Image:<\/span><br \/>\n        <span class=\"ui-media-caption__caption-text\">There have only been nine official deputy prime ministers in British history. Attlee went on to become prime minister in his own right, ousting Churchill in the 1945 General Election.<\/p>\n<p>The title of DPM was then in abeyance for the next 50 years until prime minister <a href=\"https:\/\/news.sky.com\/topic\/john-major-7472\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>John Major<\/strong><\/a> brought it back for Michael Heseltine, who had helped him win a leadership challenge.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Hezza&#8221; was already a veteran cabinet minister whose own earlier efforts to lead the Conservative Party had failed. Prescott stood for both jobs.<\/p>\n<p>While he was comfortably defeated by <a href=\"https:\/\/news.sky.com\/topic\/tony-blair-6169\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Tony Blair<\/strong><\/a> for prime minister, he beat Margaret Beckett for deputy. Prescott became DPM almost automatically when Labour took power in 1997.<\/p>\n<p>He stayed in the job for 10 years as the rough to Blair&#8217;s smooth &#8211; a crucial bridge from the old Labour&#8217;s union-dominated politics to New Labour&#8217;s big tent and a troubleshooter in the rivalry between Blair and <a href=\"https:\/\/news.sky.com\/topic\/gordon-brown-6478\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Gordon Brown<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Prescott resigned with Blair in 2007. Pic: PA<br \/>\n        <\/span><br \/>\n      <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p>It returned in super-charged form when the Conservative <a href=\"https:\/\/news.sky.com\/topic\/david-cameron-5795\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>David Cameron<\/strong><\/a> formed a coalition government with the Liberal Democrats in 2010.<\/p>\n<p>Since Nick Clegg commanded the swing votes which the government needed to make laws, he was the most powerful DPM yet, as he explained &#8220;we had to create a sort of two-headed, bicephalous way of making decisions&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>The Conservatives won power on their own in 2015 and had no DPMs until 2021. When Green resigned due to scandal, the then Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster David Lidington was known as &#8220;the de facto deputy prime minister&#8221; without being made either FSS or DPM.<\/p>\n<p>As the turnover of Conservative leaders accelerated, <a href=\"https:\/\/news.sky.com\/topic\/boris-johnson-5853\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Boris Johnson<\/strong><\/a> made <a href=\"https:\/\/news.sky.com\/topic\/dominic-raab-7670\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Dominic Raab<\/strong><\/a> FSS and then upgraded him to DPM.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/news.sky.com\/topic\/liz-truss-8281\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Liz Truss<\/strong><\/a> also appointed Therese Coffey as her short-lived DPM. <a href=\"https:\/\/news.sky.com\/topic\/rishi-sunak-8527\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Rishi Sunak<\/strong><\/a> then brought back Raab as DPM, before <a href=\"https:\/\/news.sky.com\/topic\/oliver-dowden-10676\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Oliver Dowden<\/strong><\/a> replaced him.<\/p>\n<p>None of these deputies were paid any extra above their ministerial salaries.
