The crane, known as Sukpak, flew an impressive 3,676 km to reach Khichan in the Phalodi district, surpassing the previous longest recorded flight of 2,800 km for a crane tagged in Mongolia, as reported by TOI.

Sukpak’s journey was captured by Australian tourist Carolyn Synnott, who photographed the crane at Khichan’s renowned feeding station. The bird was easily identifiable by its distinctive yellow-blue ring on its leg. “This is a male crane, tagged by our team on July 20, 2024. He was the elder of a two-chick brood,” said Elena Mudrik, a Russian crane researcher, highlighting the bird’s origin and tagging details, in a TOI report.

A Reverse Migration Route

What makes Sukpak’s migration even more remarkable is its unusual flight path. While Demoiselle cranes typically travel through Himalayan valleys and enter India via Nepal, Sukpak took a different route, flying through Russia, Kazakhstan, Turkmenistan, Afghanistan, and Pakistan before entering India through Jaisalmer. This unexpected migration pattern is considered a significant discovery in the study of Demoiselle crane behaviour.

As told to TOI, Dau Lal Bohra, a member of the Crane Specialist Group at the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), explained why Sukpak’s flight was so unique. “Tyva borders northwestern Mongolia and lies in the upper Yenisey river basin. Due to the region’s harsh conditions, this was the first time researchers successfully ringed birds there. Since the ringing was done at a further location, it increased the migration distance,” he noted. The remote region of Tyva, located in south-central Siberia, played a crucial role in Sukpak’s extended journey.

Conservation Efforts in Khichan

Sukpak’s flight to Khichan, a key stop for migratory birds in Rajasthan, further underscores the significance of conservation efforts in the region. Currently, nearly 20,000 Demoiselle cranes, or Kurjan in the local language, are roosting at Khichan for their winter sojourn. Recently designated as a conservation reserve, Khichan has become India’s first reserve dedicated to the species. This milestone highlights the growing need to conserve both the birds and their habitats.

“Khichan is India’s first reserve for Demoiselle cranes. This milestone not only enriches our understanding of bird migration but also highlights the need to conserve these species and their habitats,” said an expert. With its new status as a reserve, Khichan provides a safe haven for the cranes, ensuring their continued protection and study.Sukpak’s long-distance flight and the ongoing conservation efforts in Khichan are vital steps in deepening our understanding of migratory patterns and ensuring the survival of these majestic birds.(With inputs from TOI)

Source link

A tagged Siberian Demoiselle crane has made history by setting a new distance record for migratory birds arriving in Rajasthan.
