{"id":183824,"date":"2024-11-27T22:52:07","date_gmt":"2024-11-27T22:52:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/news.talkwithrattan.com\/index.php\/2024\/11\/27\/ex-prime-minister-david-cameron-backs-assisted-dying-bill\/"},"modified":"2024-11-27T22:52:07","modified_gmt":"2024-11-27T22:52:07","slug":"ex-prime-minister-david-cameron-backs-assisted-dying-bill","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/news.talkwithrattan.com\/index.php\/2024\/11\/27\/ex-prime-minister-david-cameron-backs-assisted-dying-bill\/","title":{"rendered":"Ex-prime minister David Cameron backs assisted dying bill"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"text-align:center\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" src=\"https:\/\/i2.wp.com\/ichef.bbci.co.uk\/news\/1024\/branded_news\/9892\/live\/85748960-ad0a-11ef-b076-7b76c62752ac.jpg?resize=1024,576&amp;ssl=1\" class=\"attachment-post-thumbnail size-post-thumbnail wp-post-image\" alt=\"Ex-prime minister David Cameron backs assisted dying bill\" title=\"Ex-prime minister David Cameron backs assisted dying bill\" \/><\/div><p> <br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\">\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">Former Prime Minister Lord David Cameron has backed moves to legalise assisted dying for terminally ill adults.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">In an op-ed in the Times, Lord Cameron said that while he had opposed moves to legalise assisted dying in the past, he believed the current proposal was &#8220;not about ending life, it is about shortening death&#8221;.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">Previously his main concern had been that &#8220;vulnerable people could be pressured into hastening their own deaths&#8221;, but he said he believed the current proposal contained &#8220;sufficient safeguards&#8221; to prevent this.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">Lord Cameron becomes the first former prime minister to support the bill <!-- --><a target=\"_self\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/articles\/c207yjrn7r6o\" class=\"sc-c9299ecf-0 bZUiKB\" rel=\"noopener\">after Gordon Brown<!-- --><\/a>, Baroness Theresa May, Boris Johnson and Liz Truss all pushed MPs to reject it this week.<!-- --><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\">\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">Brown, a longstanding critic of assisted dying, told BBC Radio 4&#8217;s Sunday programme: &#8220;An assisted dying law, however well intended, would alter society\u2019s attitude towards elderly, seriously ill and disabled people, even if only subliminally, and I also fear the caring professions would lose something irreplaceable \u2013 their position as exclusively caregivers.&#8221;<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">Brown stood down as MP in 2015 so will not get a vote but his voice still carries weight in the Labour Party.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">However Lord Cameron, appointed a peer by Rishi Sunak to serve as foreign secretary, pledged to vote for the bill if it reached the House of Lords.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">The Terminally Ill Adults (End of Life) Bill would allow terminally ill people expected to die within six months to seek help to end their life if two doctors and a High Court judge verified they were eligible and had made their decision voluntarily.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">Labour MP Kim Leadbeater introduced the bill, saying the &#8220;status quo is not fit for purpose&#8221; and her proposals could prevent &#8220;very harrowing, very distressing deaths&#8221;.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">Current laws in the UK prevent people from asking for medical help to die.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">The bill would require those who apply for assisted dying to:<!-- --><\/p>\n<ul class=\"sc-5c9c90b0-0 cnfHHs\">\n<li class=\"sc-8d73edac-0 ezcCTE\">Be over the age of 18, a resident in England and Wales and registered with a GP for at least 12 months<!-- --><\/li>\n<li class=\"sc-8d73edac-0 ezcCTE\">Have the mental capacity to make a choice about ending their life<!-- --><\/li>\n<li class=\"sc-8d73edac-0 ezcCTE\">Express a &#8220;clear, settled and informed&#8221; wish, free from coercion or pressure, at every stage of the process.<!-- --><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">Writing in The Times, Lord Cameron said: &#8220;Many of these safeguards will be familiar from previous proposals.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">&#8220;But this new Bill protects the vulnerable still further, including by making coercion a criminal offence.&#8221;<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">He added: &#8220;Will this law lead to a meaningful reduction in human suffering?
