A former Sheriff of Nottingham has resigned from the Labour Party.<\/p>\n

Nottingham City Councillor Shuguftah Quddoos was suspended from the party in March<\/a> for voting against what she called “devastating” budget cuts.<\/p>\n

Quddoos, who was appointed to the civic title of Sheriff at the time, had been the only councillor to go against party orders to approve the budget.<\/p>\n

Announcing her resignation, she told the Local Democracy Reporting Service<\/a> she had been inspired by the Poplar Rates Rebellion in London in 1921, where 30 Labour councillors were jailed.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Their stand-off refusing a court order to collect higher taxes on the borough\u2019s poorer residents ultimately led to the passing of a bill to better equalise tax burdens between the rich and poor.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Nottingham City Council budget plans, which were approved for the current year, included 550 job losses, a council tax rise of 5%, and cuts to youth services.<\/p>\n

Nottingham City Council, which is controlled by the Labour Party, will soon publish its budget for the financial year beginning April 2025.<\/p>\n

The authority, which declared effective bankruptcy towards the end of 2023,<\/a> is facing a \u00a369m shortfall, rising to a cumulative \u00a3172m over the next three years.<\/p>\n

In her resignation letter, Quddoos said: “The budget for 2025 is being written. It is likely that the cuts in it will be just as damaging as the cuts made in 2024, if not more so.<\/p>\n

“The people who will be most impacted by these cuts are going completely unheard.<\/p>\n

“If I cannot speak up for them in the way they want me to without being sanctioned for it, I cannot remain in the party.”<\/p>\n

Quddoos will continue to represent her Berridge ward as an independent councillor.<\/p>\n

It is understood an investigation by Labour into Quddoos had not concluded when she resigned.<\/p>\n

A Labour Party spokesperson said: “The new Labour leadership at Nottingham City Council is focused on taking the tough and responsible decisions to fix our local authority, and it is making progress.<\/p>\n

“We will continue to focus on this work as a team and get on with the task at hand for the people of our city, not be distracted by sniping from the sidelines.”<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
