According to the Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC), Chennai, the storm will cross the coast between Karaikal and Mahabalipuram with wind speeds of 70-80 kmph, gusting up to 90 kmph. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for several districts, warning of extremely heavy rainfall and high winds.<\/p>\n

Severe Weather Warnings Across Tamil Nadu and Puducherry<\/h2>\n

The IMD has forecast extremely heavy rain for Chennai, Tiruvallur, Chengalpattu, and Kancheepuram districts, while heavy to very heavy rainfall is predicted in regions like Nagapattinam, Mayiladuthurai, and Karaikal. The sea conditions remain rough, with authorities strongly advising fishermen to avoid venturing into the waters.<\/p>\n

An official weather bulletin stated: \u201cIt is likely to move west-northwestwards and cross north Tamil Nadu-Puducherry coasts between Karaikal and Mahabalipuram close to Puducherry as a cyclonic storm with a wind speed of 70-80 kmph gusting to 90 kmph during the afternoon of November 30.\u201d<\/p>\n

Government Takes Proactive Measures<\/h2>\n

In anticipation of the cyclone’s impact, Tamil Nadu authorities have announced the closure of schools and colleges in Chennai, Thiruvallur, Kancheepuram, Chengalpattu, and other affected districts on November 30. The Puducherry government has extended school and college closures to include November 29 as well.<\/p>\n

Public transport services along key routes such as East Coast Road (ECR) and Old Mahabalipuram Road (OMR) will be suspended on November 30 to minimise risks. IT companies have been requested to allow employees to work from home.<\/p>\n

The Tamil Nadu Revenue and Disaster Management Department has established 2,229 relief camps across the state. As of now, 471 individuals from 164 families have been accommodated in shelters in Tiruvarur and Nagapattinam. Emergency resources, including motor pumps, generators, and boats, have been deployed in Chennai, Cuddalore, and Mayiladuthurai to handle potential flooding.Senior officials are stationed in critical locations to oversee relief operations, while the National Disaster Response Force<\/a> (NDRF) and the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) have been mobilised in affected districts. Helpline numbers, including 112, 1077, and a dedicated WhatsApp number (9488981070), are active for public assistance.<\/p>\n

Precautions in Coastal Areas<\/h2>\n

The state government has issued stringent instructions to secure construction sites by lowering cranes and removing billboards to avoid accidents caused by strong winds. Over 4,100 fishing boats have returned to shore as a precautionary measure.<\/p>\n

The Eastern Naval Command has activated a disaster response mechanism in collaboration with the Tamil Nadu and Puducherry Naval Area to mitigate potential damage. Residents in low-lying areas have been urged to remain vigilant and adhere to safety advisories.<\/p>\n

Cyclone Fengal has exhibited unusual behaviour, with a prolonged development phase compared to the typical 4.4-day life cycle of a cyclonic system in the Bay of Bengal during the northeast monsoon. It was initially classified as a deep depression before intensifying into a cyclonic storm on November 29. At its latest position, it was located about 230 km east-southeast of Puducherry and 250 km southeast of Chennai.<\/p>\n

Post-Landfall Effects Expected<\/h2>\n

The cyclone\u2019s influence will extend beyond the coastal regions, with heavy rainfall predicted in interior Tamil Nadu, including Thanjavur, Tiruvannamalai, and Vellore, through December 3. Isolated areas may experience very heavy downpours on December 1.<\/p>\n
