Atul Subhash<\/a>, a 34-year-old techie from Bengaluru, took his life, leaving behind an 80-minute video and a 24-page note that have since gone viral. Subhash alleged harassment by his wife, her family, and a judge in Uttar Pradesh. He expressed frustration with the system, claiming his earnings were being exploited to fund legal action against him.<\/p>\n

In his video, Subhash said, \u201cThe money I earn is making my enemies stronger. With money from my taxes, this court and police system will harass me.\u201d He left a placard near his body with the message, \u201cJustice is due,\u201d symbolising his belief that his grievances had gone unheard.<\/p>\n

In his note, Subhash also requested that his wife and her family be excluded from his final rites, further emphasising the depth of his pain and anger.<\/p>\n

What did Kangana Ranaut say?<\/h2>\n

Bollywood actress-turned-politician Kangana Ranaut<\/a> weighed in on the tragedy, calling it \u201cheartbreaking\u201d and condemning what she termed \u201cfake feminism.\u201d Speaking to PTI, she said, \u201cThe entire country is in shock. His video is heartbreaking. Fake feminism<\/a> is condemnable. Extortion of crores of rupees was being done. Having said that, in 99% of marriage cases, it\u2019s the men who are at fault. That\u2019s why such mistakes also happen.\u201d

Her remarks have sparked widespread debate. While some supported her criticism of the alleged misuse of laws, others found her generalisation about men being at fault problematic.<\/p>\n

Atul Subhash’s Family Demands Justice<\/h2>\n

Subhash\u2019s brother has demanded justice, calling for legal reforms to protect men from harassment. He questioned why no arrests had been made despite the gravity of the allegations.<\/p>\n

\u201cI want justice for my brother. Laws should be made for the men also as they are also suffering from harassment. The Government of India should understand this. Legal Experts Call for Reform<\/h2>\n

The incident has reignited calls for reforming Section 498A<\/a> of the Indian Penal Code, which deals with cruelty against women in marriage. Delhi-based Senior Advocate Vikas Pahwa told ANI, \u201cThere are false allegations that are not only filed against the husband but also relatives, the in-laws, and others. Most of them are false. I am not saying there are no genuine cases, but a majority are filed to persuade the husband to settle the matter through some money.\u201d<\/p>\n

Pahwa further alleged, \u201cThe police do not conduct preliminary inquiries but instead facilitate monetary settlement of marital disputes to close pending cases. Unfortunately, I haven’t seen a single case where the law has been misused, and police have taken action against the woman.\u201d<\/p>\n

He suggested several reforms, including making Section 498A bailable, gender-neutral, and ensuring mediation between parties before filing cases. \u201cIf the case is found to be false, accountability should be established, and the complainant should face legal action,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n

This case has highlighted the ongoing debate around marital laws in India, with growing calls for gender-neutral legal protections. Advocates argue that while laws like Section 498A are essential to address genuine cases of abuse, their potential misuse undermines the justice system and creates undue hardship for innocent parties.<\/p>\n

The tragedy of Atul Subhash underscores the urgent need for a balanced approach that protects both men and women from harassment and exploitation, ensuring fairness and accountability in the legal process.<\/p>\n

Section 498A, introduced in 1983, was designed to protect women from cruelty within marriage, including dowry-related abuse. Over time, however, concerns about its misuse have surfaced, with allegations that it has sometimes been weaponised for financial or personal gain.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
