Girls can register at birth, during school admissions in classes 1, 6, 9, after class 10, and when entering class 12. SBI Life Insurance Company Ltd. manages the scheme’s funds, investing them to grow with the child.

However, Rs 449.9 crore remains unclaimed by beneficiaries who finished 11th and 12th grades and turned 18. Another Rs 249.2 crore is unclaimed by those who turned 18 but didn’t complete required milestones, making them ineligible. Reasons for this include lack of awareness, lost contact information, and administrative issues.

“Many insurance companies expect children to approach them, but if they aren’t doing so, it’s their responsibility to take action—someone needs to find them and ensure the money is given on time. Plus, this arrangement is only profitable for the companies,” said Ashok Aggarwal, lawyer and activist.

The Women and Child Development (WCD) Department is now focusing on fixing these issues. They are working to get unclaimed benefits distributed quickly. Enrollment in the scheme has dropped significantly, from 74,846 beneficiaries in 2015-16 to 36,993 in 2023-24.

The WCD Department plans to create an app for beneficiaries to update contact information. They are also working with schools to ensure accurate enrollment data. The department will also reach out to families directly and raise awareness through public campaigns. Meetings with teachers and administrators will help monitor student enrollment and ensure every eligible girl is included. The department also aims to find girls who might qualify but aren’t yet part of the scheme.

Source link

New Delhi: The Delhi government is working to solve problems with its Ladli Scheme, which provides financial aid to girls.
