{"id":193827,"date":"2024-12-12T14:47:07","date_gmt":"2024-12-12T14:47:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/news.talkwithrattan.com\/index.php\/2024\/12\/12\/baroness-catherine-meyer-facing-three-week-suspension-for-calling-peer-lord-poppadom-and-touching-mps-hair\/"},"modified":"2024-12-12T14:47:07","modified_gmt":"2024-12-12T14:47:07","slug":"baroness-catherine-meyer-facing-three-week-suspension-for-calling-peer-lord-poppadom-and-touching-mps-hair","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/news.talkwithrattan.com\/index.php\/2024\/12\/12\/baroness-catherine-meyer-facing-three-week-suspension-for-calling-peer-lord-poppadom-and-touching-mps-hair\/","title":{"rendered":"Baroness Catherine Meyer facing three week suspension for calling peer &#8216;Lord Poppadom&#8217; and touching MP&#8217;s hair"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"text-align:center\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"768\" height=\"432\" src=\"https:\/\/i1.wp.com\/e3.365dm.com\/24\/12\/768x432\/skynews-lord-dholakia-baroness-meyer_6774149.jpg?20241212142913&amp;resize=768,432&amp;ssl=1\" class=\"attachment-post-thumbnail size-post-thumbnail wp-post-image\" alt=\"Baroness Catherine Meyer facing three week suspension for calling peer &#8216;Lord Poppadom&#8217; and touching MP&#8217;s hair\" title=\"Baroness Catherine Meyer facing three week suspension for calling peer &#8216;Lord Poppadom&#8217; and touching MP&#8217;s hair\" \/><\/div><p> <br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div data-component-name=\"ui-article-body\" data-highlight-intro=\"true\">\n<p>A baroness has been recommended for three weeks&#8217; suspension from the House of Lords for calling a peer &#8220;Lord Poppadom&#8221; and touching an MP&#8217;s braids without her permission.<\/p>\n<p>Baroness Catherine Meyer is accused of referring to Lord Dholakia as &#8220;Lord Poppadom&#8221; twice during a taxi journey while on a visit to Rwanda with parliament&#8217;s Joint Committee on Human Rights (JCHR) in February.<\/p>\n<p>During the same visit, the 71-year-old complimented Labour MP Bell Ribeiro-Addy&#8217;s hair and asked if she could touch it.<\/p>\n<p>Without waiting for a reply, Lady Meyer then lifted up one of Ms Ribeiro-Addy&#8217;s braids, a conduct report said.<\/p>\n<p>Lady Meyer initially said the &#8220;Lord Poppadom&#8221; accusations were &#8220;unfounded&#8221; and &#8220;baseless&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>But after evidence from two witnesses, including Ms Ribeiro-Addy, she admitted the incident took place at the end of a long day and after a dinner where she had drunk &#8220;possibly three glasses of wine&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>She then acknowledged: &#8220;It is possible I said it, but I don&#8217;t remember.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Lady Meyer did not deny the incident with Ms Ribeiro-Addy and said she had intended it as a friendly gesture and had been &#8220;entirely unaware&#8221; it would be unwelcome, the report said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Oh gosh, I did the wrong thing,&#8221; she said immediately after understanding the MP&#8217;s body language.<\/p>\n<div class=\"sdc-article-widget sdc-article-image\">\n<figure class=\"sdc-article-image__figure\">\n<div class=\"sdc-article-image__wrapper\" data-aspect-ratio=\"16\/9\"><\/div><figcaption class=\"ui-media-caption\">\n        <span class=\"u-hide-visually\">Image:<\/span><br \/>\n        <span class=\"ui-media-caption__caption-text\">Lord Dholakia was called Lord Poppadom by Baroness Meyer, the Lords complaints committee found. Pic: House of Commons<br \/>\n        <\/span><br \/>\n      <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p>The committee said the &#8220;lasting impact&#8221; on Ms Ribeiro-Addy from the hair incident and the name calling was &#8220;apparent from her complaint&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>She wrote: &#8220;With every week and every request to just write my complaint I grew angrier and more distressed about the situation.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Unable to put the complaint into words without becoming very upset.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The committee said Lady Meyer touching the MP&#8217;s hair without her permission was harassment as it was unwanted, violated her dignity, was perceived as harassment and it was reasonable for her to perceive it in that way.<\/p>\n<p>But, they said Lady Meyer showed remorse and willingness to apologise, and determined she had no malicious or racist intention in touching Ms Ribeiro-Addy&#8217;s hair.<\/p>\n<p>The committee therefore recommended she be suspended from the House of Lords for three weeks due to the racial element of the first incident, and &#8220;bespoke behaviour training&#8221; for both incidents.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p><br \/>\n<br \/><a href=\"https:\/\/news.sky.com\/story\/baroness-catherine-meyer-facing-three-week-suspension-for-calling-peer-lord-poppadom-and-touching-mps-hair-13272136\">Source link <\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A baroness has been recommended for three weeks&#8217; suspension from the House of Lords for calling a peer &#8220;Lord Poppadom&#8221; and touching an MP&#8217;s braids without her permission.
