So, too, is the <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/03\/31\/world\/middleeast\/netanyahu-israel-protests-cease-fire.html\" title=\"\">tenure of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu<\/a>. In Israel, some are now asking: Are the two linked?<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">To his allies, Mr. Netanyahu\u2019s refusal to agree to a cease-fire in Gaza is a necessary one, made in the national interest and backed by many Israelis. The thinking goes that Israel must cripple Hamas to <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/02\/07\/world\/middleeast\/netanyahu-hamas-gaza-negotiations.html\" title=\"\">weaken its hand at cease-fire negotiations<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">To his critics, the prime minister is dragging out the war to prevent the collapse of his <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/03\/11\/us\/politics\/netanyahu-gaza-intelligence-report.html\" title=\"\">fragile right-wing coalition<\/a> and extend his time in office. By this analysis, he has made <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/02\/01\/world\/middleeast\/netanyahu-israel-gaza-politics-war.html\" title=\"\">a domestic calculus<\/a> that ignores both the <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/04\/04\/world\/middleeast\/netanyahu-israel-gaza.html\" title=\"\">growing global anger about the bloodshed<\/a> \u2014 including from Israel\u2019s most powerful ally, President Biden, which <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/04\/04\/world\/middleeast\/biden-netanyahu-call-israel.html\" title=\"\">erupted into full view on Thursday<\/a> \u2014 and the rising anger from the families of Israeli hostages who seek their relatives\u2019 immediate release.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Israel\u2019s longest-serving prime minister, Mr. Netanyahu has long been portrayed as a vacillator who prefers to delay decisions for as long as possible so that he can keep all of his options open.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">His strategy is attracting renewed scrutiny because of the scale of what is at stake: Israel\u2019s war in Gaza, which began in response to a Hamas-led raid on Israel on Oct. 7, has since killed more than 32,000 people, according to Gazan health authorities. It has led experts to <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/03\/18\/world\/middleeast\/gaza-famine-report-starvation.html\" title=\"\">warn of a looming famine<\/a> and has stigmatized Israel on the global stage, amid accusations, strongly denied by Israel, that it has <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/01\/25\/world\/middleeast\/icj-israel-genocide-ruling.html\" title=\"\">pursued a genocide against Gazans<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The debate over Mr. Netanyahu\u2019s intentions has been imbued with still more urgency by an Israeli strike this week that <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/04\/02\/world\/middleeast\/israel-gaza-aid-workers-killed.html\" title=\"\">killed seven aid workers in Gaza<\/a>, escalating international alarm over <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/04\/04\/world\/middleeast\/israel-wck-gaza-iran-embassy.html\" title=\"\">Israeli military tactics<\/a>.
