Modern technology puts it within reach.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Our present system isn&#8217;t working,&#8221; he added. &#8220;This is a time for shaking up. For once-in-a-generation disruption. Digital ID is a good place to start.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Compulsory physical ID was one of the flagship projects in Mr Blair&#8217;s premiership, but plans were shelved by the coalition government before they could be introduced.<\/p>\n<p>    <a href=\"https:\/\/news.sky.com\/download-app\" target=\"blank\" data-tracking-label=\"ui-app-promo-download-link\" class=\"ui-app-promo sdc-article-widget\" data-type=\"\" data-component-name=\"ui-app-promo\" rel=\"noopener\"><\/p>\n<p>    <\/a><\/p>\n<p>Mr Blair&#8217;s Institute for Global Change estimates the scheme would cost \u00a31bn to launch and \u00a3100m a year to maintain, but could save the Treasury \u00a32bn a year.<\/p>\n<p>Separate analysis in 2019 by consultants McKinsey found ID cards could boost Britain&#8217;s GDP by 3% by streamlining bureaucracy and access to public services.<\/p>\n<p>But opponents argue they pose risks to civil liberties and could lay the foundations for a surveillance state.<\/p>\n<div class=\"sdc-article-widget sdc-article-image\">\n<figure class=\"sdc-article-image__figure\">\n<div class=\"sdc-article-image__wrapper\" data-aspect-ratio=\"16\/9\"><\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p>The implementation of ID cards varies widely around the world.<\/p>\n<p>Cards remain only optional in most OECD countries, whereas Chile, Luxembourg and Turkey legally require citizens to carry ID at all times.<\/p>\n<p>There seems to have been a move towards ID cards in recent years, with Norway, Hungary, Denmark, Japan and Lithuania all introducing them in the last 10 years.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Read more from Sky News:<br \/><a href=\"https:\/\/news.sky.com\/story\/government-demands-immediate-mandatory-housing-plans-from-councils-to-build-1-5m-homes-13271785\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Govt demands &#8216;immediate, mandatory&#8217; housing plans for 1.5m homes<\/a><br \/><a href=\"https:\/\/news.sky.com\/story\/eight-injured-after-double-decker-bus-hits-glasgow-bridge-13273921\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Eight injured after double decker bus hits Glasgow bridge<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The UK government has given mixed signals over whether digital ID is on the agenda.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking to Sky&#8217;s Trevor Phillips days after the election, Business Secretary Jonathan Reynolds said Home Secretary Yvette Cooper &#8220;would be looking at all the sources of advice&#8221; on the issue &#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/news.sky.com\/story\/labour-rejects-blairs-call-for-digital-id-cards-to-cut-migration-13174510\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>only to reverse that in another interview hours later<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The government has since tabled legislation to help create &#8220;digital identities&#8221;, allowing people to opt in or out of having certain information, like their address or biometrics, on their digital record.<\/p>\n<p>Ministers have made pains to stress these would be neither mandatory nor digital ID cards.<\/p>\n<p>Australia started rolling out a similar scheme earlier this month, despite concerns over privacy and safeguarding.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>On today&#8217;s Sunday Morning with Trevor Phillips, Trevor will be joined by Border Security Minister Angela Eagle, shadow home secretary Chris Philp, and journalist and historian Anne Applebaum. <\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Watch it live on Sky News from 8.30am, and follow along live on the Politics Hub.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p><br \/>\n<br \/><a href=\"https:\/\/news.sky.com\/story\/the-uk-is-an-outlier-by-not-taking-up-id-research-finds-as-tony-blair-calls-for-digital-card-shake-up-13273946\">Source link <\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The UK is one of the only developed economies not using a form of national ID card, research has shown.
