Hackers had stolen $1.8\u00a0billion (roughly Rs.\u00a015,302 crore) in 2023.<\/p>\n<p>The rise in\u00a0<a class=\"sp_lnk2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.gadgets360.com\/tags\/crypto-hacks\">crypto\u00a0heists<\/a> comes as Bitcoin\u00a0jumped 140 percent this year to surpass $100,000 (roughly Rs. 85 lakh) mark, drawing institutional participation and backing\u00a0from\u00a0US President-elect Donald Trump.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;As the digital asset market booms, it is typical to see the illicit use of\u00a0crypto\u00a0grow in tandem,&#8221; Chainalysis&#8217; cybercrimes research lead Eric Jardine said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Countering the proliferation of these crimes \u2014 especially fraud \u2014 will undoubtedly be a key challenge for the industry in the new year.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Compromises to private key that controls access to users&#8217; assets accounted for the majority of stolen\u00a0crypto\u00a0this year with most of the attacks targeting centralised platforms, the\u00a0report\u00a0said.<\/p>\n<p>Among the most notable\u00a0hacks\u00a0are the theft of more than $305 million (roughly Rs. 2,593 crore) from\u00a0Japan&#8217;s\u00a0crypto\u00a0exchange DMM Bitcoin in May and the loss of $235 million (roughly Rs.\u00a01,997 crore) from\u00a0India&#8217;s <a class=\"sp_lnk2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.gadgets360.com\/tags\/wazirx\">WazirX<\/a> in July.<\/p>\n<p>Crypto\u00a0hacking linked to North Korea more than doubled\u00a0from\u00a0a year ago to a record high of $1.3\u00a0billion (roughly Rs.\u00a011,053 crore) in\u00a02024, Chainalysis said.<\/p>\n<p>Cryptocurrency allows North Korea to circumvent international sanctions, the United Nations has said.
