Alphabet’s\u00a0Google’s\u00a0proposed\u00a0changes\u00a0to its\u00a0search\u00a0results to comply with\u00a0EU\u00a0tech legislation has received the\u00a0thumbs\u00a0up\u00a0from\u00a0lobbying group\u00a0Airlines\u00a0for\u00a0Europe whose members include Air France KLM and Lufthansa.<\/p>\n

Google<\/a> has announced a series of\u00a0changes\u00a0in\u00a0search\u00a0result\u00a0formats in recent months following conflicting demands\u00a0from\u00a0price-comparison sites, hotels,\u00a0airlines\u00a0and small retailers, with the latest tweaks announced last month.<\/p>\n

It is trying to comply with the Digital Markets Act (DMA)<\/a>, which prohibits it\u00a0from\u00a0favouring its own products and services on its platform or risk fines as much as 10 percent of its global annual turnover.<\/p>\n

“In the spirit of finding a DMA-compliant solution in a timely fashion, the airline industry has shown it is willing to compromise,”\u00a0Airlines\u00a0for\u00a0Europe said in a letter to the\u00a0European Commission dated December 20 and seen by Reuters.<\/p>\n

The airline group\u00a0expressed support for the horizontal layout for same sized boxes for\u00a0airlines\u00a0and comparison sites in\u00a0search\u00a0results as well as the colour blue to distinguish them\u00a0from\u00a0other elements.<\/p>\n

But it said prices displayed in\u00a0search\u00a0results should be the same in the graphic as those in the boxes. It also expressed concerns about\u00a0Google’s\u00a0proposal for a purely indicative date rather than specific dates for consumers looking to book flights.<\/p>\n

“Characteristics such as dates are an integral part of the general\u00a0search\u00a0process of consumers looking for air travel and the switch to a purely indicative date will downgrade their experience significantly,” the group.<\/p>\n

Google has said it may return to an old format of 10 blue links in\u00a0search\u00a0results that it used years ago if its rivals – such as\u00a0airlines\u00a0and price comparison sites – cannot agree on its proposals to comply with the DMA and not promote its own products.<\/p>\n
