Pic: PA<br \/>\n        <\/span><br \/>\n      <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p>Mr Harris, who at 37 will be <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/news.sky.com\/story\/simon-harris-set-to-become-youngest-ever-prime-minister-of-ireland-after-being-named-fine-gael-leader-13101106\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the youngest ever Taoiseach<\/a><\/strong>, said: &#8220;It&#8217;s a legitimate political aspiration for people in our country to want to see a united Ireland.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/news.sky.com\/story\/the-good-friday-agreement-25-years-on-peace-hope-and-paralysis-12851185\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Good Friday Agreement<\/a><\/strong> provides that framework. You can recognise different political aspirations and a clear pathway for those to be achieved.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;That&#8217;s not where my focus and priority is right now and quite frankly, it&#8217;s not where I believe our focus and priority should be.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We have a peace process that is enduring on this island and is in many ways, one of the most successful peace processes in the world.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;But it&#8217;s also a frosty peace. I don&#8217;t believe we&#8217;ve had an opportunity to see the full potential of prosperity embedded right across the island of Ireland through the framework of the Good Friday Agreement.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Read more:<br \/><a href=\"https:\/\/news.sky.com\/story\/simon-harris-who-is-the-man-tipped-to-be-irelands-next-prime-minister-13099270\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Who is Simon Harris, Ireland&#8217;s next prime minister?<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<div class=\"sdc-article-widget sdc-article-image\">\n<figure class=\"sdc-article-image__figure\">\n<div class=\"sdc-article-image__wrapper\" data-aspect-ratio=\"16\/9\">\n          <img decoding=\"async\" class=\"sdc-article-image__item\" loading=\"lazy\" intrinsicsize=\"768x432\" src=\"https:\/\/e3.365dm.com\/24\/04\/768x432\/skynews-simon-harris-taoiseach_6512033.jpg?20240406101324\" srcset=\"https:\/\/e3.365dm.com\/24\/04\/384x216\/skynews-simon-harris-taoiseach_6512033.jpg?20240406101324 380w, https:\/\/e3.365dm.com\/24\/04\/768x432\/skynews-simon-harris-taoiseach_6512033.jpg?20240406101324 760w, https:\/\/e3.365dm.com\/24\/04\/1600x900\/skynews-simon-harris-taoiseach_6512033.jpg?20240406101324 1024w, https:\/\/e3.365dm.com\/24\/04\/2048x1152\/skynews-simon-harris-taoiseach_6512033.jpg?20240406101324 2048w\" sizes=\"(min-width: 1024px) 1024px, 100vw\" alt=\"Ireland\u2019s new prime minister-elect, Simon Harris, talks to David Blevins, senior Ireland correspondent\"\/>\n    <\/div><figcaption class=\"ui-media-caption\">\n        <span class=\"u-hide-visually\">Image:<\/span><br \/>\n        <span class=\"ui-media-caption__caption-text\">Simon Harris will become the youngest ever Taoiseach at 37<br \/>\n        <\/span><br \/>\n      <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p>Mr Harris described Brexit as &#8220;really difficult and challenging&#8221;, Ireland having had to deal with five UK prime ministers, six foreign secretaries and six Northern Ireland secretaries in the space of five years.<\/p>\n<p>He said: &#8220;We had very clear national ambitions going into that engagement, in terms of protecting our national interest, protecting our role in the single market, and crucially, protecting the peace process.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;But I want to say this very clearly, I do want to have closer relations with Britain, with the UK government.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Trade between our two countries is worth \u20ac2.5bn every single week.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We know each other historically, through families, through friends, through work.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Britain remains our nearest neighbour, even if outside of the European Union, and I do think a lot of good progress has been made in the last year.&#8221;<\/p>\n<div class=\"sdc-article-widget sdc-article-factbox\">\n<div class=\"sdc-article-factbox__text-wrapper\">\n<p><h4 class=\"sdc-article-factbox__title\">Harris strikes different tone to Varadkar<\/h4>\n<\/p>\n<p class=\"sdc-article-factbox__text\">Outgoing Taoiseach Leo Varadkar initially declined to answer the question on Irish unity.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sdc-article-factbox__text\">He felt it could be deemed provocative during sensitive negotiations on post-Brexit trading arrangements.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sdc-article-factbox__text\">Eight months later, he lost his reticence, saying he believed he would see a united Ireland in his lifetime.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sdc-article-factbox__text\">With Sinn Fein riding high in the polls, he appeared to be stealing its clothes.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sdc-article-factbox__text\">Diplomatic relations with the UK, and with Unionists, went from bad to worse.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sdc-article-factbox__text\">Simon Harris has struck a different tone, acknowledging the aspiration as legitimate, but not a priority.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sdc-article-factbox__text\">His comments will be well received in Westminster and by Unionist parties in Northern Ireland.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sdc-article-factbox__text\">The incoming Irish prime minister appears to be focused on rebuilding relations with the neighbours next door.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sdc-article-factbox__text\">Some Unionists will still argue that a united Ireland is not &#8220;a legitimate political aspiration&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sdc-article-factbox__text\">But why would Northern Ireland remaining British be a legitimate political aspiration and Irish unity not be?<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Mr Harris, who will face a general election by March 2025 at the latest, denied the coalition government had been slow to address concerns around immigration.<\/p>\n<p>He said: &#8220;Ireland gets immigration.
