However, findings from the water utility’s internal assessment last year revealed that around 25 per cent of these tubewells failed to meet the recommended water standards concerning nitrate, iron, ammonia, fluoride, and other parameters.

“Water supplied through tubewells is not of good quality. While the chief secretary has directed the measurement of the quantity of water being extracted from tubewells, what about the quality of the water?” asked a DJB official.

In the meeting in March 2023 with Kejriwal, DJB had discussed this issue but did not implement the CM’s suggestions even after a year.

Kejriwal had approved an Internet of Things-based system to monitor the existing working tubewells. He also asked the officials to expedite the work, but in vain, informed a DJB official.“Through this system, it is possible to know the quality of water provided and even the health of the tubewell. This system provides real-time data at a command control centre. Currently, it is in function at some water treatment plants, but for tubewells, the pilot project is yet to start,” added the DJB official. On April 5th, Chief Secretary Kumar issued a new instruction following a request from Water Minister Atishi to evaluate the water needs of the city and propose a plan considering the increasing demand for water. The minister emphasized that she had received numerous complaints regarding insufficient water supply in the city.

At present, DJB generates an average of 990 million gallons per day (MGD) of water. This includes groundwater production of 135 MGD per day, an increase of approximately 20 MGD over the same in the previous year.

Kumar has also directed each chief engineer of DJB to submit a plan of their contributions to increasing the water production capacity of the water utility in the last five years.

(With TOI inputs)

Source link

The Delhi Jal Board has been asked by Delhi chief secretary Naresh Kumar to develop a five-year action plan to enhance the city’s drinking water supply, including maintaining a record of groundwater extraction by each tubewell using flow meters.
