Speaking on X (formerly Twitter), Subramanian highlighted the need for ambitious growth targets. “India must aspire to grow at 8% consistently and become a prosperous nation,” he stated.

— SubramanianKri (@SubramanianKri)

Economic Freedom as a Cornerstone

Subramanian underscored the role of economic freedom in unleashing India’s potential, drawing comparisons with the success of Indians in the United States. “Policymakers must reflect on why Indians do so well in the US. Not as much needless regulation, rules, etc. In essence, more economic freedom. If India learns this lesson, we can achieve our deserved place,” he added.

The Need for Homegrown Innovation

Echoing this sentiment, Vembu highlighted the critical role of homegrown innovation in addressing India’s unique challenges. “To earn true respect in the world, Indians have to develop deep capabilities in India. Achievements abroad won’t do it,” he wrote on X. He called for reducing reliance on foreign products and technologies while leveraging India’s vast talent pool to develop solutions tailored to the country’s specific needs.

Retaining Talent for National Progress

Vembu shared his personal commitment to nurturing talent within India. “As an Indian, I work hard to retain talent in India because we so badly need the talent to develop India’s technology capability,” he explained. Comparing this approach with the United States’ reliance on imported talent, he urged India to prioritise local skill development to ensure long-term sustainability and growth.

Inclusive Development is Key

Vembu also stressed the importance of inclusive development as a pillar of national progress. “National development cannot be achieved if large sections of society are left behind,” he noted, urging policymakers to address social inequalities. He questioned the value of achieving global rankings in metrics like GDP or artificial intelligence if significant sections of the population are excluded from progress. “Is it worth the bragging rights to be number one in GDP or AI, achieved with imported talent, but at the price of leaving your own people behind?” he asked.

Insights on Talent Migration

Reflecting on international talent migration, Vembu acknowledged the success of nations like the United States in attracting global talent but warned of its limitations. He advocated for India to focus on retaining and developing its own talent to strengthen domestic capabilities. “Many companies prefer importing talent over developing it domestically, but this approach often neglects the potential of the local workforce,” he remarked. As part of his commentary on talent development, Vembu shared a story about Sriram Krishnam, an Indian programmer who recently joined US President-elect Donald Trump’s advisory team on artificial intelligence. “Back in 2004, when Sriram was graduating from SRM University, I came across his blog—one of the early programming blogs from India at that time. I was so impressed I wanted to recruit him, but Microsoft already had recruited him. We have been in touch on and off as he later moved to Silicon Valley and became an entrepreneur,” Vembu said.

Sridhar Vembu’s insights are rooted in his experience leading Zoho Corporation, a global technology firm that has prioritised local innovation and talent development. Zoho operates extensively in rural India, a move Vembu has championed as a model for decentralised development. Similarly, Krishnamurthy V Subramanian has been a strong advocate for policies promoting economic freedom, viewing them as essential for unlocking India’s growth potential.

Both leaders emphasise the need to focus on long-term empowerment over short-term achievements, advocating for a growth model that is sustainable, inclusive, and locally driven. Their shared vision serves as a call to action for policymakers and businesses to harness India’s unique strengths and pave the way for a prosperous future.

Source link

India must focus on developing indigenous capabilities and fostering an environment conducive to sustained economic growth, emphasised Krishnamurthy V Subramanian, former Chief Economic Adviser, and Sridhar Vembu, CEO of Zoho Corporation.
