They comprised 21.58 million households, up 8.3% from a year earlier.<\/p>\n<p>Monthly work demand under the scheme had fallen consistently between November 2023 and October 2024, amid improved economic activity offering more remunerative job prospects.<\/p>\n<p>The relatively low base inflated the increase in work demand, in percentage terms, from November.<\/p>\n<p>Amid plentiful monsoon rains last year, particularly since July, many <a ref=\"dofollow\" data-ga-onclick=\"Inarticle articleshow link click#News#href\" href=\"https:\/\/economictimes.indiatimes.com\/topic\/non-skilled-workers\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">non-skilled workers<\/a> shifted to farming, reducing reliance on unskilled <a ref=\"dofollow\" data-ga-onclick=\"Inarticle articleshow link click#News#href\" href=\"https:\/\/economictimes.indiatimes.com\/topic\/nregs\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">NREGS<\/a> work. However, with summer crops already harvested in most parts of the country, many labourers returned in December, an official said.<\/p>\n<p><!--\/include_growfast.cms?pagename=article&skipcss=1potime:3--><br \/>The latest increase in demand for mostly-unskilled NREGS work comes amid an &#8220;upswing&#8221; in the <a ref=\"dofollow\" data-ga-onclick=\"Inarticle articleshow link click#News#href\" href=\"https:\/\/economictimes.indiatimes.com\/topic\/rural-economy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">rural economy<\/a>, the official said.In the first three quarters of this fiscal, 229.8 million people covering 183 million households demanded work under the NREGS.On a sequential basis, work demand from individuals and households rose in December by 19.7% and 17.5%, respectively, from the November level.<\/p>\n<p><strong>&#8216;Resilient&#8217; rural consumption<\/strong><br \/>The finance ministry, in its latest economic review issued last week, said <a ref=\"dofollow\" data-ga-onclick=\"Inarticle articleshow link click#News#href\" href=\"https:\/\/economictimes.indiatimes.com\/topic\/rural-consumption-demand\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">rural consumption demand<\/a> remained &#8220;resilient&#8221;.
