Prime Minister Narendra Modi<\/a> is set to lay the foundation stone for the Veer Savarkar College<\/a> in Roshanpura, Najafgarh, today. The project, part of Delhi University<\/a>\u2019s expansion plans, comes at a critical time, ahead of the 2025 Delhi Assembly elections<\/a>, sparking political discussions around its timing and the choice of name.The foundation-laying ceremony is part of a larger event where PM Modi will inaugurate and lay foundation stones for multiple projects across Delhi. These include residential and commercial redevelopment initiatives and eco-friendly infrastructure, underscoring the government\u2019s emphasis on sustainable and inclusive urban development.<\/p>\n

What is the cost and facilities?<\/h2>\n

The college, which will cost an estimated Rs 140 crore and span a built-up area of 18,816.56 square metres, is located near the Urban Extension Road (UER) highway and within a five-minute walk of the proposed West Campus. <\/p>\n

It will feature state-of-the-art facilities, including 24 classrooms, eight tutorial rooms, 40 faculty rooms, department libraries, conference rooms, and a canteen.<\/p>\n

Savarkar, a polarizing figure in Indian history, is celebrated by many as a freedom fighter and proponent of Hindutva but criticized by others for his controversial ideological stance.<\/p>\n

Oppn lashes out at BJP<\/h2>\n

Opposition parties have alleged that the project is an attempt by the BJP to capitalize on Savarkar\u2019s legacy and appeal to its core voter base in Delhi ahead of the polls. Congress leader Naseer Hussain, who accused the BJP of “giving legitimacy to those people who have written mercy petitions to the British and taken pensions from them.” <\/p>\n

\u201cThere were many freedom fighters who sacrificed their lives for the sovereignty and freedom of the country. Had they named the college after either one of them, it would have been a tribute to them,\u201d Hussain said. He added, \u201cBut since the BJP has no leaders or icons, they are promoting and legitimizing those who supported the British Raj.\u201d<\/p>\n

The National Students’ Union of India (NSUI), affiliated with the Congress, has requested that the college be named after former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh instead.<\/p>\n

BJP says ‘insulting’ is Congress’ habit<\/h2>\n

On the other hand, BJP leaders have lauded the project. BJP leader Shehzad Poonawalla criticized Congress MP Naseer Hussain for opposing the decision. Poonawalla accused Congress of consistently disrespecting important figures.<\/p>\n

\u201cInsulting great people has become the identity of Congress. Rahul Gandhi has yet again insulted Veer Savarkar through one of his MPs, Naseer Hussain. Delhi University (DU) is naming one of its colleges after Veer Savarkar, and Congress has already started opposing it,\u201d Poonawalla stated.<\/p>\n

Poonawalla questioned whether prominent figures like Indira Gandhi, Sharad Pawar, Uddhav Thackeray, and Shivraj Singh Chouhan were also mistaken for praising Savarkar. \u201cI ask Naseer Hussain Ji, whether Indira Gandhi, Sharad Pawar, Uddhav Thackeray, or Shivraj Singh Chouhan were also wrong since all of them have praised the greatness of Savarkar?\u201d he asked.
