As the world steps into 2025, China faces a new health challenge: the spread of Human Metapneumovirus<\/a> (HMPV<\/a>). This virus, particularly affecting children under 14 in northern provinces, has triggered concerns globally. India, while currently free of reported cases, is closely monitoring the situation amidst memories of the COVID-19 pandemic.<\/p>\n

Current Situation in China<\/h2>\n

China has reported a surge in HMPV cases, with children being the most affected group. The virus is transmitted through respiratory droplets, close contact, or contact with contaminated surfaces. According to the Chinese Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (China CDC), HMPV belongs to the Pneumoviridae family and has an incubation period of three to five days. The virus is known for weak immune protection, leading to repeated infections.<\/p>\n

In response, China is piloting a monitoring system for pneumonia of unknown origin to improve preparedness. Last week, the Chinese disease control authority indicated a rising trend in respiratory infections, including HMPV and rhinovirus, during the winter months.<\/p>\n

Is India at Risk?<\/h2>\n

Dr Kuldeep Kumar Grover, Head of Critical Care and Pulmonology at CK Birla Hospital in Gurugram, told Times Now, \u201cWith Indian density, people’s spread of respiratory viruses needs to be of concern. Some precautionary hygiene practices like hand washing, more usage of masks in crowded areas, and avoiding someone’s close contact can reduce that risk.\u201d He also assured the public that no cases have been reported in India and emphasised the importance of avoiding panic.

India\u2019s National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) is closely monitoring respiratory infections and seasonal influenza. What is Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV)<\/h2>\n

HMPV is a single-stranded negative-sense RNA virus that can cause both upper and lower respiratory diseases in people of all ages. Symptoms often mimic the common cold or flu, including fever, cough, nasal congestion, and shortness of breath. The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) lists coughing, sneezing, and close personal contact as the primary modes of transmission.<\/p>\n
