Union Health Ministry<\/a> on Monday confirmed two cases of HMPV in India. A 3-month-old female infant was diagnosed with Human Metapneumovirus<\/a> (HMPV) after being admitted to Baptist Hospital in Bengaluru with a history of bronchopneumonia<\/a>. <\/p>\n

Additionally, an 8-month-old male infant tested positive for HMPV on January 3, 2025, after being admitted to the same hospital with a history of bronchopneumonia. <\/p>\n

Both babies are recovering from the virus. <\/p>\n

The Union Health Ministry stated that it is closely monitoring the situation through all available surveillance channels.”ICMR will continue to track trends in HMPV circulation throughout the year. The World Health Organization (WHO) is already providing timely updates regarding the situation in China to further inform ongoing measures,” the ministry added.This comes amid growing concerns about a surge in HMPV cases in China. The baby was diagnosed at Baptist Hospital, although Karnataka’s state health department clarified that the sample was not tested in their laboratory, according to media reports.<\/p>\n

The Union Health Ministry of India moved quickly to address concerns over the detection of HMPV, reassuring citizens that there is no immediate cause for alarm.<\/p>\n

The government said that HMPV, along with other respiratory viruses like Influenza and Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV), is not uncommon during the flu season. India is closely monitoring the situation globally through various channels, including regular updates from the World Health Organization (WHO).<\/p>\n

Is there a vaccine for HMPV?<\/h2>\n

<\/b> Human Metapneumovirus, which was first identified in 2001, remains a challenging virus for which no specific vaccine or antiviral treatment exists. <\/p>\n

Despite over two decades of research, HMPV continues to be difficult to manage globally, especially during periods of widespread outbreaks. <\/p>\n

This virus, belonging to the Pneumoviridae family, is a common cause of respiratory infections<\/a>, especially in children, elderly individuals, and those with weakened immune systems. It is particularly known for causing infections that resemble those of RSV or influenza.<\/p>\n

While there is no antiviral treatment available, supportive care such as oxygen therapy, intravenous fluids, and corticosteroids may be used in severe cases.<\/p>\n

Rising concerns over HMPV in China<\/h2>\n

<\/strong> Reports from China indicate a notable increase in HMPV and other respiratory infections in recent weeks, particularly affecting children under 14. <\/p>\n

The country has faced significant strain on its healthcare system as hospitals, especially those dedicated to children\u2019s care, have been overwhelmed with cases of pneumonia, often referred to as “white lung.” <\/p>\n

In response, Chinese health authorities have implemented new monitoring systems to track pneumonia cases of unknown origin and improve preparedness for emerging respiratory pathogens.<\/p>\n

The China CDC has expressed concerns about a potential rise in respiratory infections as winter continues, and Chinese officials have warned that the situation may continue to evolve in the coming months. <\/p>\n

However, despite these concerns, the total number of respiratory infections in 2024 remains lower than in 2023.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

India’s preparedness<\/h2>\n

<\/strong> India is maintaining vigilance as HMPV cases rise in China, with the National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) tracking respiratory illnesses during the winter months. <\/p>\n

The Union Health Ministry has assured the public that Indian authorities are in constant communication with global health agencies, including WHO, to stay informed about the evolving situation.<\/p>\n

Experts from India\u2019s Directorate General of Health Services have urged the public to adopt general preventive measures to limit the spread of respiratory infections. Dr. Atul Goyal, from the DGHS, noted that there is no cause for concern at the moment, emphasizing the importance of practices like mask-wearing and hand hygiene.<\/p>\n

In preparation for any potential rise in cases, the Indian government has conducted a nationwide drill to test the country’s readiness to handle an increase in respiratory illnesses.
