The company recently gave a heads-up to Trump officials about the change, according to a person with knowledge of the conversations. Meta\u2019s chief executive, Mark Zuckerberg, also said yesterday that Meta had added Dana White, the head of Ultimate Fighting Championship and a longtime friend of Trump, <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/01\/06\/technology\/dana-white-meta-board-ufc.html\" title=\"\">to its board<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Zuckerberg said that the shift would begin in the U.S. in the coming months.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cIt\u2019s time to get back to our roots around free expression,\u201d he said, adding that the current system had \u201creached a point where it\u2019s just too many mistakes and too much censorship.\u201d He conceded that there would be more \u201cbad stuff\u201d on the platform as a result of the decision, and called it a \u201ctrade-off\u201d that would also result in fewer \u201cinnocent people\u2019s posts\u201d being taken down.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\"><strong class=\"css-8qgvsz ebyp5n10\">Reactions:<\/strong> The move seemed to please Trump. His conservative allies were quick to hail the decision. Many of them felt that they had been unfairly targeted by the program.
