If the polls hold, Mr. Poilievre will emerge as the next prime minister in a general election that must be held by October but will most likely be held in the spring after Mr. Trudeau\u2019s announcement on Monday that he would resign as party leader and prime minister once his party decides on a successor.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">A career politician long known as a fierce attack-dog for his party, with an instinctive sense of the themes that resonate among voters, Mr. Poilievre has successfully pummeled the unpopular Mr. Trudeau in the past year and made him appear out of touch.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Mr. Poilievre drove the nation\u2019s political agenda by handpicking issues \u2014 housing costs, inflation and immigration \u2014 that, according to many Canadians, Mr. Trudeau\u2019s government had underestimated or mishandled.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">But in a news conference announcing his resignation, Mr. Trudeau said that Mr. Poilievre\u2019s \u201cvision for this country is not the right one for Canadians,\u2019\u2019 adding that the opposition leader was not offering \u201can ambitious, optimistic view of the future.\u2019\u2019<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-2\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Whether Mr. Poilievre can cling to his lead in the polls, or even build on it, as voters now get to know him better remains unclear. In the months ahead, the Liberal Party\u2019s choice of a successor could yield a bump in the party\u2019s popularity. And Mr. Poilievre, who became leader of the Conservatives in 2022, will have to campaign on his own agenda to win over mainstream voters.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-3\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cHe\u2019d be very different from any other prime minister we\u2019ve had,\u2019\u2019 said Duane Bratt, a political scientist at Mount Royal University in Calgary, Alberta. \u201cHe\u2019s been very combative, and he\u2019s been like that his whole life. That\u2019s great as an opposition leader, and even as a junior minister. But can he do that as prime minister?\u2019\u2019<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Like other populist leaders, Mr. Poilievre has tapped into the post-pandemic frustrations of voters over rising living costs, unaffordable housing and what to many seemed like a smug Trudeau government that made big decisions \u2014 like increasing immigration to historical levels or imposing a carbon tax \u2014 without much explanation or consultation.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Three years ago, Mr. Poilievre was one of the few politicians to openly support truckers who paralyzed the center of Ottawa, the capital, for weeks to protest vaccine mandates.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cHe\u2019s channeled an anti-elitism in Canada,\u2019\u2019 said Lori Turnbull, a political scientist at Dalhousie University in Halifax, Nova Scotia. \u201cIt is populist, it is anti-institutional. That is a big part of his messaging.\u2019\u2019<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-4\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Mr. Poilievre has pushed a traditionally conservative message of personal freedom, small government, lower taxes, being tough on crime and softer on regulations on Canada\u2019s oil industry.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">But he has laced his message with railings against \u201cglobalist Davos elites,\u2019\u2019 threatening to fire Canada\u2019s central banker, embracing cryptocurrency and attacking the mainstream media, especially the public broadcaster, the C.B.C., which he has vowed to defund.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cThe problem we\u2019ve had in this country and in all of the countries that have been afflicted by this horrendous utopian wokeism is that it\u2019s been focused on the grand, the grandiosity of the leadership of the egotistical personalities on top and not the things that are grand and great about the common people,\u2019\u2019 Mr. Poilievre said in a recent <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=Dck8eZCpglc\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">interview<\/a> with Jordan Peterson, the Canadian psychologist and conservative social media star.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cAnd that is another reason why I think we\u2019re doing very well,\u2019\u2019 Mr. Poilievre added. \u201cPeople are saying, finally, there\u2019s someone who\u2019s focused on letting me take back control of my own life.\u2019\u2019<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-5\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Elon Musk, the billionaire and one of President-elect Donald J. Trump\u2019s most influential supporters, <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/elonmusk\/status\/1874978775093678532\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">said<\/a> \u201cgreat interview\u201d about Mr. Poilievre\u2019s appearance on Mr. Peterson\u2019s podcast. Mr. Musk appeared to embrace Mr. Poilievre even as he continued to belittle Mr. Trudeau.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cGirl, you\u2019re not the governor of Canada anymore, so doesn\u2019t matter what you say,\u2019\u2019 Mr. Musk <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/elonmusk\/status\/1876891493014569426?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E1876891493014569426%7Ctwgr%5E50d48d82bcb0d23a538257bea71552d18190632d%7Ctwcon%5Es1_&amp;ref_url=https:\/\/timesofindia.indiatimes.com\/world\/us\/elon-musk-calls-justin-trudeau-a-girl-amid-fiery-exchange-over-trumps-canada-takeover-idea\/articleshow\/117055803.cms\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">posted<\/a> on social media after Mr. Trudeau said there was not \u201ca snowball\u2019s chance in hell\u2019\u2019 that Canada would become part of the United States, as Mr. Trump has suggested.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">In his personal life, Mr. Poilievre couldn\u2019t be more different from Mr. Trudeau, who \u2014 as the son of Pierre Trudeau, who led Canada for nearly 16 years and helped define Canada\u2019s modern identity \u2014 grew up in the prime minister\u2019s official residence in Ottawa.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">In an apparent effort to emphasize his modest origins, Mr. Poilievre has often told the story of how he was born in Calgary to a 16-year-old mother and given up for adoption. His adoptive parents were schoolteachers who separated when he was 12, after which his father came out as gay.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">When he was elected Conservative Party leader in a landslide in 2022, he saluted his biological mother, his adoptive parents and his father\u2019s longtime partner, all of whom were in the audience.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-6\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cWe\u2019re a complicated and mixed-up bunch, like most families, like our country,\u2019\u2019 said Mr. Poilievre, who supports same-sex marriage and abortion rights.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Mr. Poilievre has two young children with his wife, Anaida Galindo, a former Senate aide he met in Ottawa. Ms. Poilievre was born in Venezuela but grew up with her family in Montreal. Her husband has often referred to the benefits of immigration by citing as an example Ms. Poilievre\u2019s family, saying they came to Canada \u201cwith almost nothing\u2019\u2019 and \u201clike so many immigrant families, built our country.\u2019\u2019<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-7\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Involved in conservative politics in Calgary since his early teens, Mr. Poilievre became the youngest member of Parliament when he was elected in 2004 at the age of 25. He rose quickly through the ranks, impressing older politicians with his hard work, acumen and combativeness, earning the nickname, \u201cSkippy.\u2019\u2019<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">He tried to shed the image evoked by the nickname with a makeover in the summer of 2023. Abandoning navy blue suits and ties, he began appearing in public in jeans and sometimes tightfitting T-shirts. He jettisoned his squarish glasses for contacts and aviator sunglasses.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-8\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cHe\u2019s transformed his own image from this nerdy little guy with the glasses and scowl on his face all the time to this sort of Bitcoin bro who is appealing to young voters, male voters,\u2019\u2019 said Ms. Turnbull, the political scientist.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Mr. Poilievre said in the interview with Mr. Peterson that he had become \u201ctougher\u201d since becoming Conservative leader and was ready to become prime minister.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cIt\u2019s personal for me,\u2019\u2019 he said. \u201cI don\u2019t come from a privileged or wealthy background. I was adopted by schoolteachers, grew up in a normal suburban neighborhood. We didn\u2019t always have money.
