Kolkata: A high-level meeting between the Inspector General (IG) of Border Security Forces<\/a> (BSF<\/a>), South Bengal Frontier, Maninder PS Pawar, and Regional Commander (South-West Region) of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB<\/a>) Brigadier General Mohammad Humayun Kabir was held at Petrapole-Benapole international border on Thursday, amid the ongoing turmoil in Bangladesh. Meanwhile, West Bengal police arrested two Bangladeshi women from Nadia and South 24 Parganas districts on Thursday.\u201cAn informal pre-scheduled meeting was held on Thursday at ICP Petrapole on the India-Bangladesh border<\/a> in North 24 Parganas district of West Bengal,\u201d a senior BSF official said.<\/p>\n

The BSF and BGB held discussions on coordination and peace along the border and the significance of fostering mutual cooperation between the two border security forces, people in the know told ET.<\/p>\n

\u201cPawar emphasised on the importance of mutual cooperation between the two forces in promoting a more secure border environment, ensuring stability and fostering prosperity in the region. Both sides reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening bilateral relations and continuing efforts to enhance the spirit of cooperation between India and Bangladesh,\u201d BSF said in a statement.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe commanders discussed various issues of mutual interest, including joint efforts against cross-border crimes, ongoing development activities in border areas, measures to prevent illegal border crossings<\/a>, and effective border management,\u201d sources said.<\/p>\n


India shares a 4,096-km border with Bangladesh, of which a 2,216-km long stretch runs alongside West Bengal. In South Bengal, India shares a 913-km border with Bangladesh out of which 424 km remains unfenced, a senior BSF official told ET.Two Bangladeshi Women Arrested<\/a>Two Bangladeshi women were arrested in Bengal on Thursday. One woman, Sova Mullick, was arrested from Naihati police station area from North 24 Parganas district, as she allegedly had no Indian documents, police sources said.<\/p>\n

The second woman was arrested in Nadia\u2019s Krishnaganj police station area, police said. She was reportedly living in Mumbai. Sources told ET that the woman had entered Bengal six months back from the Bongaon border illegally and was working as an attendant in Mumbai. In fear of getting arrested, she returned to Nadia and was arrested from there. She was produced in a local court and has been remanded to six-day police custody.<\/p>\n

In another incident, one Samir Das, a staff of Barasat court was arrested in connection with a fake passport nexus. Das was reportedly instrumental in issuing fake passports, police sources said.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, in Malda’s Baishnabnagar area, there was minor issues between BSF and BGB over fencing on Wednesday night, administration sources said.<\/p>\n

\u201cFlag meetings were held last night by BSF and BGB. There were some sporadic issues but fencing work is going on,\u201d an official told ET. However, BSF did not confirm any tension.<\/p>\n

On Monday night, tension had erupted between the BSF and BGB over the installation of barbed wire fencing on the India-Bangladesh border in Malda. The Central government\u2019s Road Works Department, in collaboration with the BSF, in Malda\u2019s Sukdevpur area, was undertaking the fencing work when the BGB intervened. This incident came to light on Tuesday. The work was then temporarily stopped but then resumed.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe issue has been resolved after and fencing work is on,\u201d an administrative source told ET today. EOM
