Putin and President-elect Donald J. Trump, but that any concrete steps to set up such talks could be made only once Mr. Trump is sworn into office on Jan. 20.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Responding to comments made on Thursday by Mr. Trump, who said that Mr. Putin wants to meet him to discuss the war in Ukraine, the Kremlin\u2019s spokesman reaffirmed Russia\u2019s longstanding official position that Moscow is ready to talk.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cWe need a mutual desire and political willingness to engage in a dialogue,\u201d Dmitri S. Peskov, the Kremlin\u2019s spokesman, told reporters. \u201cWe see that Mr. Trump also declares his readiness to solve issues via dialogue. \u201cWe welcome that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Mr. Peskov added that the Kremlin\u2019s understanding is that there is a \u201cmutual readiness for a meeting,\u201d but, he said, \u201cit looks like things will start to move after Trump enters the Oval Office.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-1\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Mr. Peskov did not confirm that Mr. Putin had requested a meeting with Mr. Trump or that one was being set up, <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/eu.usatoday.com\/story\/news\/politics\/2025\/01\/10\/trump-putin-meeting\/77591006007\/\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">as Mr. Trump said<\/a> on Thursday night.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">While asserting its territorial claim over its five regions in Ukraine, the Kremlin has been insisting that it would prefer diplomacy over war. <\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Ukraine and some of its Western allies have questioned Russia\u2019s seriousness in offering to negotiate, and said that the Kremlin\u2019s conditions actually represent a demand for Ukrainian capitulation.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">After being largely isolated from the West for almost three years since the invasion of Ukraine, a meeting with the American president would represent a chance for Mr. Putin to negotiate with a friendlier American administration.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Mr. Trump has repeatedly said that he could resolve the Russia-Ukraine war within 24 hours after entering office, without saying how, but this week <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/trump-says-he-sympathizes-with-russias-opposition-nato-membership-ukraine-2025-01-07\/\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">suggested<\/a> that it could take up to six months. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-2\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Speaking at a news conference on Tuesday, Mr. Trump said that he was sympathetic with the Russian position that Ukraine should never join NATO, one of the main conditions put forward by the Kremlin to end the war.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Mr. Trump\u2019s victory in November produced a wave of cautious optimism that the war could end soon, even if in an unstable cease-fire. But analysts have said that the process will be hard and tedious, and many in Ukraine and elsewhere fear that Mr. Trump might want to push through a deal at the expense of its capitulation.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">In Russia, Giorgy Bovt, a political analyst, said that if a meeting between Mr. Trump and Mr. Putin happens too early, when \u201cthe conditions for peace have not yet matured,\u201d it could \u201clead to greater escalation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cBoth warring parties are still betting on continuing military action,\u201d Mr. Bovt wrote in <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/t.me\/bovtznaet\/6246\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">a post<\/a> on Telegram, a popular messaging app. \u201cThey do not consider their forces exhausted.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Tatiana Stanovaya, a senior fellow at the Carnegie Russia Eurasia Center, <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/t.me\/stanovaya\/1825\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">wrote<\/a> on social media that \u201cthe higher the expectations\u201d from the meeting \u201cthe riskier the game, most of all for Trump.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<p><br \/>\n<br \/><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/01\/10\/world\/europe\/trump-putin-meeting.html\">Source link <\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Kremlin said on Friday that Russia remains open to a meeting between President Vladimir V.
