Mr. Maduro has presented no evidence that he won a July election, while his opponent Edmundo Gonz\u00e1lez has <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/resultadosconvzla.com\/\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">presented thousands<\/a> of publicly available vote tallies that he says indicate <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/07\/31\/world\/americas\/venezuela-maduro-election-results.html\" title=\"\">he easily won<\/a> the most votes.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The United States has recognized Mr. Gonz\u00e1lez as the president-elect of Venezuela and has urged Mr. Maduro to step aside.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">In 2020, under the Trump administration, the State Department offered a $15 million reward for help arresting Mr. Maduro. At the time, he was indicted in the United States, accused in a decades-long narco-terrorism and international cocaine trafficking conspiracy. Mr. Maduro remains under indictment.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-1\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The Justice Department\u2019s <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2020\/03\/26\/nyregion\/venezuela-president-drug-trafficking-nicolas-maduro.html\" title=\"\">formal accusation<\/a> of a foreign head of state was an unusual move that signaled the United States was likely to take an increasingly hard line against Mr. Maduro.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The new $25 million bounty represents an escalation.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The United States will also offer $25 million for information leading to the capture of the country\u2019s interior minister, Diosdado Cabello, up from $10 million.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">And the State Department added another reward: $15 million for help with detention of Venezuela\u2019s defense minister, Padrino L\u00f3pez.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Just minutes after Mr. Maduro was sworn in on Friday for another term, the U.S. Treasury Department also said it was placing new sanctions on eight Venezuelan officials, adding to a long list of Maduro allies already under sanction.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The measures freeze assets that the officials have in the United States.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cThe United States and its allies in the region have pushed Maduro to commit to a democratic transition,\u201d Bradley T. Smith, a treasury official, said in a statement. \u201cInstead, Maduro and his representatives have continued their violent repression in an attempt to maintain power, and have ignored the Venezuelan people\u2019s calls from for democratic accountability.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-2\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The Biden administration also announced that it would extend protections given to roughly 600,000 Venezuelans living in the United States who have temporary protected status, a program that allows migrants from countries experiencing crisis to live and work legally in the United States.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Venezuelan migrants who apply can have their status extended another 18 months.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<p><br \/>\n<br \/><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/01\/10\/world\/americas\/biden-bounty-nicolas-maduro.html\">Source link <\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Biden Administration said on Friday that it was offering $25 million for information leading to the arrest of Nicol\u00e1s Maduro, the president of Venezuela.
