It did not provide details on where, or say when the second was taken prisoner, but said they were the first North Koreans fighting against Ukraine in Kursk to be captured.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-1\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Interrogations are being carried out through Korean translators in coordination with South Korea\u2019s intelligence service, according to the SBU. South Korea\u2019s embassy in Ukraine did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Neither Russia nor North Korea had any immediate comment.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Ukraine\u2019s intelligence agency and Mr. Zelensky both shared photographs and videos of the two soldiers, showing one with bandages around his jaw and the other with bandaged hands.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">According to the rules governing treatment of prisoners of war under the Geneva Conventions, governments are supposed to protect a prisoner of war from being made into a \u201cpublic curiosity,\u201d a concept that is <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2022\/03\/05\/world\/europe\/ukraine-russia-soldiers-war.html\" title=\"\">sometimes interpreted as not presenting them<\/a> in any public setting.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Fierce fighting has raged in Kursk as Russian forces try to rout Ukrainian troops and drive them back across the border. Bolstered by more than 11,000 <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/12\/23\/world\/asia\/north-korea-military-russia-what-to-know.html\" title=\"\">North Korean soldiers<\/a>, Russian troops have regained roughly half of the territory they lost in the area.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">But Ukraine has hung on to more than 150 square miles of land inside Russia.
