He was charged with illegally providing material used in the attack by an Iranian-backed militia on a military base in Jordan.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">On Sunday, the Italian Justice Ministry said it did not have the grounds to extradite him. Soon after the announcement, Iranian state media and Mr. Abedini\u2019s lawyer said he was free, but the Italian government has not yet confirmed that.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The Italian ministry\u2019s request for the arrest to be revoked came just days after <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/01\/08\/world\/europe\/italy-iran-cecilia-sala-journalist-released.html\" title=\"\">Iran freed an Italian reporter,<\/a> Cecilia Sala, who had been arrested in Iran three days after Mr. Abedini was detained. She was arrested on accusations of violating the laws of the Islamic Republic, though the Iranian government never provided details.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-1\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">While the Italian government never confirmed any connection between the two cases, Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni said last week that Ms. Sala\u2019s release was the result of a diplomatic \u201ctriangulation\u201d with the United States and Iran.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Shortly after Italy\u2019s announcement, IRNA, Iran\u2019s state news agency, said that the man \u201cwill return to his country in a few hours.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">In Sunday\u2019s government statement, Italy\u2019s Justice Ministry said that according to the extradition treaty between Italy and the United States, a person could be extradited only for crimes that are punished in both countries. Mr. Abedini\u2019s case, they said, did not fit the criteria.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">One of the crimes that he is accused of \u2014 conspiring to export sophisticated electronic components in violation of U.S. export control and sanctions laws \u2014 is not punished in Italy, the ministry said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\"> Italy\u2019s Justice Ministry also said that it had not received evidence to justify another accusation leveled against Mr. Abedini: that he allegedly provided material support to a foreign terrorist organization.
