As more time goes by people will get more proof.”

Sarma, “Those who did agitation will have to answer the people about the lies and bogus claims they made. They said people in truckloads are waiting to enter Assam. It will be scientifically proven that their claims were without any substance.”

Recently Sarma had said about three-six lakh people will apply for Indian citizenship under the CAA in the state and these applicants will comprise only those who were excluded from the updated National Register of Citizens (NRC). Sarma in an interview to a local television channel said around 7 lakh Muslims and 5 lakh Hindu-Bengalis were left out of the NRC list. “Many Hindu-Bengalis had come at different points of time and stayed at refugee camps however when they applied for inclusion in NRC, they submitted a stamped paper as proof of having stayed at such camps. But, Prateek Hajela (former NRC state coordinator) did not accept the paper. As a result, names of many Hindu-Bengalis were not included in the NRC.” Sarma said that while many Hindu-Bengalis who had applied for inclusion in NRC will submit applications under the Citizenship (Amendment) Act 2019, many others will take legal recourse as they will have to approach the tribunal to get their names cleared.

He added, “Applicants excluded from the NRC also include 2 lakh Assamese caste Hindus like those having the Das (surname), the ‘Koch-Rajbongshi’ (community) and there are around 1.5 lakh Gorkhas.”

He said, “Applications under the CAA will be three- six lakh, with a 10 per cent margin of error. There won’t be any 15 or 18 or 20 lakh or 1.5 crore applicants in Assam as claimed by protestors”.

Around 3.30 crore people had applied for inclusion in the NRC, but the names of nearly 40 lakhs of them were excluded in the draft NRC published on July 30, 2018. Of them, around 36.28 lakh people had claimed for inclusion on the list and about 2 lakhs had registered their objections. They were called for subsequent hearings where provisions were made to obtain their biometric details.

The supplementary NRC list had found more than 31.1 million people eligible to be included in the registry and left out over 1.9 million people. NRC is an exercise to weed out illegal immigrants and is monitored by the Supreme Court.

The Centre had earlier month implemented the Citizenship (Amendment) Act, 2019, notifying the rules four years after the law was passed by Parliament to fast-track citizenship for undocumented non-Muslim migrants from Pakistan, Bangladesh and Afghanistan who came to India before December 31, 2014.

Sarma said, “Amit Shah will hold a road show in Tinsukia. In the first five seats of the first phases there is no competition, and we will win handsomely. In the second and third phase there is some competition in one seat each.”

He added, “By 2026 Congress party will cease to exist.
