Elon Musk Criticized His Sentencing.\" \/><\/div><p> <br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-0\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Hours after a <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/07\/30\/world\/europe\/uk-southport-knife-attack-victims.html\" title=\"\">deadly knife attack<\/a> in the northern English town of Southport last July, Andrew McIntyre set up a Telegram channel called \u201cSouthport Wake Up.\u201d Amid posts riddled with anti-Islamic, antisemitic and anti-immigrant abuse, he urged people to take to the streets, directing them to a mosque and calling for \u201cwar.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Mr. McIntyre, 39, who took part in two of <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/08\/03\/world\/europe\/southport-stabbing-uk-riots.html\" title=\"\">several riots that rattled Britain<\/a> last summer, was <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.merseyside.police.uk\/news\/merseyside\/news\/2025\/january-2025\/man-jailed-for-encouraging-violent-disorder-and-criminal-damage\/\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">sentenced<\/a> to seven years in prison last Monday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">He pleaded guilty to encouraging violent disorder and criminal damage, and to possession of a knife. A day after his conviction, Elon Musk, the billionaire tech mogul, bemoaned Mr. McIntyre\u2019s sentencing in a post on his social media platform X, declaring: \u201cOver 7 years prison for social media posts \u2026 Whoever gave that sentence deserves prison themselves.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-2\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cI think it\u2019s really important to note here just how extreme the individuals that Musk has been defending and engaging with in Europe and in the U.K. in recent months are,\u201d said Joe Mulhall, the director of research for Hope Not Hate, a Britain-based advocacy group that researches extremism, particularly on the far right.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">While Mr. Musk has used his platform to amplify Tommy Robinson, <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/10\/26\/world\/europe\/who-is-tommy-robinson-the-activist-behind-a-far-right-london-rally.html\" title=\"\">Britain\u2019s most well-known far-right extremist<\/a>, the tech billionaire has also spoken out in favor of lesser-known figures like Mr. McIntyre. In doing so, Mr. Mulhall said, Mr. Musk voiced support for a neo-Nazi who has previously been a member of fascist groups.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Mr. Musk did not respond to a request for comment.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The summer riots followed a deadly <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/08\/03\/world\/europe\/southport-stabbing-uk-riots.html\" title=\"\">attack at a dance class in Southport<\/a> on July 29, in which a knife-wielding assailant killed three young girls and injured several others. <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/interactive\/2024\/08\/09\/technology\/migrants-racism-social-media-violence.html\" title=\"\">Disinformation soon spread on social media<\/a>, claiming that the suspect, who was later identified as <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/08\/01\/world\/europe\/southport-stabbings-suspect-axel-rudakubana.html\" title=\"\">Axel Rudakubana<\/a>, was a Syrian asylum seeker who had arrived on a small boat, when in fact he was born in Wales.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-3\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\"><a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/hopenothate.org.uk\/2025\/01\/06\/twisted-firestarter-southport-wake-up-founder-jailed-thanks-to-hope-not-hate-investigation\/\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Research conducted by Hope Not Hate showed<\/a> that Mr. McIntyre used a Telegram account within hours of the Southport attack to call for violence and then created a TikTok account and Telegram channel to promote it, calling the latter \u201cSouthport Wake Up.\u201d He shared a post under a pseudonym in that Telegram channel encouraging a demonstration the next day on St. Luke\u2019s Road in Southport, near the site of the knife attack, and drew a red circle around a mosque on that road. He added the message \u201ctime for a \ud83d\udd25TIME FOR WAR.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">On July 30, a violent mob targeted the mosque that Mr. McIntyre had highlighted, and dozens of police officers were injured. <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/08\/03\/world\/europe\/southport-stabbing-uk-riots.html\" title=\"\">Days of unrest<\/a> convulsed Britain over the next week, as rioters clashed with the police, lit cars on fire, attacked mosques and ransacked businesses.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Later, in piecing together various accounts run by Mr. McIntyre across social media and messaging platforms, Hope Not Hate found posts from him on Aug. 3, declaring that \u201cThe mosques must burn,\u201d and on Aug. 6, calling for the killing of all Jewish, Muslim and Black people, and adding: \u201cWhite power.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">His extremism extended back years before the riots. Mr. McIntyre posted a selfie in July 2022 in which he gave a Nazi salute, and after his arrest, the police found a copy of \u201cMein Kampf,\u201d Hitler\u2019s political manifesto, in his home.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The Merseyside Police, which oversee policing in the Liverpool area, said Mr. McIntyre\u2019s messages on Telegram encouraged others to participate in violent disorder and cause criminal damage in Southport. He also made other \u201cfailed attempts to instigate disorder at other locations,\u201d the police said in a statement.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-4\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Mr. McIntyre took part in riots in Southport on July 30 and in Liverpool on Aug. 3, the police said, and had a knife when he was arrested on Aug. 8.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Paula Jones, a detective inspector with the Merseyside Police, said that Mr. McIntyre had played a key role in coordinating the July 30 riot, using social media to encourage people to travel to Southport and Liverpool to commit criminal damage.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Mr. McIntyre\u2019s social media footprint included graphic threats of rape and violence against other users. \u201cIt\u2019s also a useful case study to understand the hypocrisy that sits at the center of Musk when it comes to discussing Britain,\u201d Mr. Mulhall said. \u201cOn one hand, Mr. Musk bemoans the <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/01\/07\/world\/europe\/uk-grooming-gangs-elon-musk.html\" title=\"\">abuse of women through grooming gangs<\/a>, while simultaneously defending the rights of individuals to use social media to send rape threats and death threats to women.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Mr. Musk\u2019s decision to reinstate the once-banned accounts of other members of Britain\u2019s far right, including Mr. Robinson, has significantly boosted their profile and helped spread extremist ideology, according to groups that monitor the far right. (Mr. Robinson is <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/10\/28\/world\/europe\/tommy-robinson-sentenced-uk-far-right.html\" title=\"\">currently in prison for contempt of court<\/a>, though his account on X remains active, and supporters are posting in his stead.)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-5\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Sophia Gaston, a British policy analyst and a visiting fellow at King\u2019s College London, said that Mr. Musk\u2019s focus on Britain aligned with broader scrutiny of the country by the MAGA movement. Mr. Musk has criticized the British government and authorities for efforts to combat hate speech and violent rhetoric, framing himself as a defender of free speech.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cBut there is a difference between that amplification of voices outside of the mainstream of political life and giving a spotlight to those who have been convicted of criminal offenses,\u201d Ms. Gaston said. \u201cIn McIntyre\u2019s case, these are not spurious laws around political correctness, which can be open to interpretation.
