There are also still technical details that need to be worked out. Two other officials said there was last-minute wrangling over the Egypt-Gaza border, which is currently controlled by Israeli forces.<\/p>\n<div class=\"css-1dv1kvn\">\n<p class=\"live-blog-post-content css-h61jh5 evys1bk0\">A White House official, who spoke on condition of anonymity, confirmed that a cease-fire deal has been reached.<\/p>\n<p class=\"live-blog-post-content css-h61jh5 evys1bk0\">President-elect Donald J. Trump also announced that a hostage deal had been reached, writing on social media that \u201cTHEY WILL BE RELEASED SHORTLY.\u201d Mr. Trump had threatened severe consequences unless Israel and Hamas reached an agreement before his Jan. 20 inauguration, which some officials credited with helping the negotiations to advance.<\/p>\n<p class=\"live-blog-post-content css-h61jh5 evys1bk0\">If implemented, the cease-fire would allow for the release of Israeli hostages held in Gaza and Palestinian prisoners in Israel, after more than a year of devastating war that has killed tens of thousands of Palestinians and destroyed much of the enclave.<\/p>\n<p class=\"live-blog-post-content css-h61jh5 evys1bk0\">Neither Israel nor Hamas has publicly endorsed the agreement, but the Palestinian group said on Tuesday that the negotiations had entered their \u201cfinal stages,\u201d and Israel\u2019s foreign minister, Gideon Saar, said on Wednesday evening that he was returning early from a trip abroad to join cabinet discussions about the hostages. Hamas said in a statement on Wednesday evening that it had responded to the proposed deal, without clarifying further.<\/p>\n<p class=\"live-blog-post-content css-h61jh5 evys1bk0\">In order to implement the deal, Hamas\u2019s negotiating team at the talks in Doha, Qatar, must obtain the consent of the group\u2019s commanders in Gaza, including Muhammad Sinwar, whose brother Yahya led the group before being <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/10\/17\/world\/middleeast\/yahya-sinwar-dead.html\" title=\"\">killed by Israel in October<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"live-blog-post-content css-h61jh5 evys1bk0\">Hamas officials did not respond to questions about whether Mr. Sinwar had replied to the proposal. But two Israeli security officials said that objections raised by Mr. Sinwar to a draft agreement had been resolved and estimated that a deal could be concluded within the coming 24 to 48 hours.<\/p>\n<p class=\"live-blog-post-content css-h61jh5 evys1bk0\">A Hamas official aware of the talks said that its negotiators were working to have details finalized by the end of Wednesday or Thursday but that negotiations were still ongoing and that the timing was not clear.<\/p>\n<p class=\"live-blog-post-content css-h61jh5 evys1bk0\">Officials spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss sensitive diplomacy.<\/p>\n<p class=\"live-blog-post-content css-h61jh5 evys1bk0\">Here\u2019s what you need to know:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"live-blog-post-content css-1ie9vib ez3869y0\">\n<li class=\"css-1i3ul0c eoqvrfo0\">\n<p class=\"css-1il0jfh evys1bk0\"><strong class=\"css-8qgvsz ebyp5n10\">Negotiations: <\/strong>The latest round of talks is being held in Qatar, a key mediator alongside Egypt and the United States. But on Wednesday, Gideon Saar, the Israeli foreign minister, <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/TheNationalNews\/status\/1879431395283480700\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">said<\/a> he believed that a majority would sign off on an agreement if it came to a cabinet vote.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"css-1i3ul0c eoqvrfo0\">\n<p class=\"css-1il0jfh evys1bk0\"><strong class=\"css-8qgvsz ebyp5n10\">Hostage talks:<\/strong> The deal on the table comes after months of shuttle diplomacy have failed to end the war in Gaza, which began after Hamas launched a surprise attack on Israel on Oct. 7, 2023, that killed 1,200 people and saw 250 taken hostage.
