Guwahati: Leaders of the Kuki-Zo Council<\/a> (KZC), the apex socio-political body of the Kuki-Zo tribal communities in Manipur<\/a>, held a meeting with senior officials of the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) in New Delhi to push for a separate administration and initiate a political dialogue.The four-member delegation of the KZC, led by its Chairman Henlianthang Thanglet, met the Adviser to MHA A. K. Mishra and Joint Director, MHA, Rajesh Kamble on Friday.<\/p>\n

Sources in the council said that they told the MHA officials about the precarious situation in the tribal inhabited areas.<\/p>\n

The KZC also apprised the MHA officials about the biased role of a section of the security<\/a> personnel and how the tribal are being deprived by the state administration.<\/p>\n

Friday’s meeting with the MHA officials assumes significance in view of the ongoing ethnic violence in Manipur<\/a> and the government\u2019s moves to resolve the ethnic crisis in the northeastern state. <\/p>\n


The KZC last week urged Manipur Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla to take steps to deploy “neutral central security forces” to deal with the ethnic crisis and also pressed their demand for a Union Territory. At least 250 people have been killed and over a thousand people injured in the ethnic violence between the tribal Kuki-Zo and the non-tribal Meitei people since May 3, 2023. More than 60,000 people have been displaced from their homes and villages and now staying in relief camps in different districts for the past 20 months.Meanwhile a prominent Kuki-Zo organisation has called for a ban on the Meitei Mayek Script subject in both government and private schools in Moreh town, effective from the upcoming academic year (2025-2026). <\/p>\n

In a notification, the education department of the Hill Tribal Council (HTC) in Tengoupal District, Manipur, directed that the Manipuri\/Meitei Mayek subject be removed from school syllabi in the region.<\/p>\n

The notification recommended that students opt for alternative subjects such as Hindi, English, Mizo, Thadou, Hmar, Zou, Maring, Anal, Vaiphei, Paite, Gangte, or any other Modern Indian Languages (MIL) subjects instead.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, in response to the HTC’s directive, Khuraijam Athouba, spokesperson for the Coordinating Committee on Manipur Integrity (COCOMI), condemned the move, calling it \u201cdetrimental to future generations.\u201d <\/p>\n

Athouba said that that HTC’s actions could isolate communities and undermine the unity in diversity that Manipur stands for. He urged the state government to take immediate legal action against those advocating for such divisive measures to preserve the state’s harmony and ensure the younger generation could embrace a shared identity.

MLA\u2019s death<\/strong>
N Kayisii, the sitting Naga MLA from Tadubi Assembly Constituency in Senapati district, passed away on Saturday at the age of 58.<\/p>\n

The MLA, who had been battling a prolonged illness, breathed his last at around 1:30 pm at his official residence in Lamphel, Imphal.<\/p>\n

Kayisii served as the Manipur State Unit President of the National People’s Party (NPP) from March 2021.He was also the Minister of Tribal and Hill Areas Development and Fisheries from 2017 to 2020.
