An illegal Bangladeshi<\/a> immigrant, Shariful Islam Shehzad Mohammed Rohilla Amin Fakir, was arrested last week for an attempted robbery and assault on actor Saif Ali Khan at his Bandra residence. The case has reignited concerns about unauthorised entry and stay in India, particularly in major cities like Mumbai.<\/p>\n

The Illegal Bangladeshis entry and settlement network<\/h2>\n

According to the crime branch, most illegal Bangladeshi immigrants enter India through border regions such as Malda, 24 Parganas, Murshidabad, Dineshpur, and Chapali Nawabganj. Once in the country, these immigrants reportedly pay agents between \u20b92,000 and \u20b910,000 to procure fake Aadhaar cards, enabling them to settle and work. These agents also facilitate job placements in exchange for commissions, a TOI report stated.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere is a vast network operating in India that helps these illegal immigrants settle here,\u201d an officer from the crime branch stated. \u201cThey are not afraid of cases being registered against them because it guarantees their prolonged stay. Until a judgment is passed, they cannot be deported, and they often secure bail within days.\u201d<\/p>\n

Repeated re-entry despite deportation efforts<\/h2>\n

Despite ongoing deportation drives, the cycle continues as many deported individuals reportedly return under new identities. Several illegal immigrants find work in domestic roles, construction, or other informal sectors, with some entering illegal activities.<\/p>\n

Last year, the Mumbai police arrested 310 Bangladeshi nationals for illegal stay, and in a recent operation, 30 more were apprehended. Some of the arrested individuals had allegedly been voting in elections for years, further complicating the issue.<\/p>\n


Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has highlighted the issue of illegal immigrants seeking birth certificates to obtain voting rights, describing it as \u201cvote jihad part 2.\u201d During a state BJP convention in Shirdi, he mentioned 100 such cases reported in Amravati and Malegaon taluka in Nashik, involving individuals obtaining fraudulent documents.In December, Fadnavis announced plans to construct a detention center in Mumbai to house illegal Bangladeshi immigrants.<\/p>\n

Demand for cheap labor drives the trend<\/h2>\n

A significant demand for affordable domestic workers and laborers in cities like Mumbai is a key driver behind the continued influx of illegal immigrants. \u201cThere is scarcity of maids and cooks, and local workers demand large sums. In comparison, Bangladeshis are ready to work round-the-clock and come cheap,\u201d said Chaya Kadam, a city resident.<\/p>\n

The issue highlights the challenges of addressing unauthorised immigration while balancing economic demand and border security concerns.
