After the court pronounced the sentence, chief minister <a ref=\"dofollow\" data-ga-onclick=\"Inarticle articleshow link click#News#href\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/economictimes.indiatimes.com\/news\/mamata-banerjee\" rel=\"noopener\">Mamata Banerjee<\/a> had announced on Monday evening that the state would approach the Calcutta High Court challenging the verdict.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I am convinced that the case is indeed the rarest of rare which demands capital punishment&#8230; I strongly feel that it is a heinous crime that warrants capital punishment. We will plead for capital punishment of the convict at the High Court now,&#8221; she had posted on X.<\/p>\n<p>Attacking Banerjee, BJP state president <a ref=\"dofollow\" data-ga-onclick=\"Inarticle articleshow link click#News#href\" href=\"https:\/\/economictimes.indiatimes.com\/topic\/sukanta-majumdar\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Sukanta Majumdar<\/a> said, &#8220;West Bengal government has hurriedly moved to HC and it looks doubtful. We also wanted punishment of the accused. We hope the Supreme Court will look into other angles and direct the probe accordingly to the central agency. Not only Sanjay Roy, all others who have been instrumental in the crime should be brought to book.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;There may be two reasons behind the hasty move of the state government to the Calcutta High Court. Mamata Banerjee is seeking Roy&#8217;s removal and thus seeking capital punishment.
