England legend Joe Root<\/a> delivered a commanding performance, scoring an unbeaten 78 and taking two crucial wickets, as the Paarl Royals secured their spot in the SA20 playoffs with an 11-run victory over Pretoria Capitals on a scorching day at Boland Park on Saturday.
Reflecting on Root’s impact, Paarl Royals coach Trevor Penny lavished praise on the star batter. “I think with Root, he brings a lot,” Penny said. “He’s always with the youngsters, always helping them. He’s just an amazing human being, really. Whatever he does on the field, he’s even better off it. He’s like another assistant coach type thing. That’s Root.”

Root’s influence has been instrumental in the Royals’ success. “First few games, he won almost on his own,” Penny added. “But the great thing is everyone’s chipping in now. Mitch, Rubin, and Davy have been outstanding. People are playing their roles and not trying to bat like millionaires, even though they are.”
The Royals’ unique strategy of bowling 20 overs of spin proved decisive. Penny explained the rationale behind the decision: “We’ve gone from two spinners to five spinners on this wicket. It’s slow, and it’s harder to hit spin. I’m glad it worked out for us.”<\/p>\n

Root’s calm head also played a key role during the game. “When we were two down, I was a bit worried, looking at a 70 all-out scenario,” Penny admitted. “But Root sent messages back, saying, \u2018Don’t try too much; keep wickets in hand.’ That was crucial.”
Despite Root’s brilliance, his upcoming departure for England looms large. “We lose Root after the ninth game, and that’s a big loss because his performances have been fantastic for us,” Penny said. “But we’ve got guys like Sam Hain<\/a>, and we’re looking at replacements.”<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, Pretoria Capitals captain Rilee Rossouw<\/a> found positives despite the loss. “Our bowling was exceptional, especially our two left-arm spinners,” Rossouw said. “With the bat, we played outside our comfort zone on a bowler-friendly wicket, giving ourselves a chance.”
Facing 20 overs of spin was a unique challenge for the Capitals. “It’s probably the first time in South Africa something like that has happened,” Rossouw observed. “Credit to their bowlers for how they went about their business.”
Rossouw remains optimistic about the Capitals’ playoff chances. “We just have to play good cricket. Barring one game, we’ve had chances in every match. It’s about staying positive and backing our processes,” he emphasised.
