While other countries in Latin America have raised concerns about President Trump\u2019s sweeping deportation plans, Colombia appears to be the first to explicitly refuse to cooperate.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cI cannot make migrants stay in a country that does not want them,\u201d Mr. Petro wrote, \u201cbut if that country sends them back, it should be with dignity and respect for them and for our country.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Mr. Petro\u2019s stance is likely to put him on a collision course with Mr. Trump, who since taking office last Monday has issued a series of executive orders and made other moves aimed at laying the groundwork to try to deport an enormous number of migrants.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-1\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Among other things, Mr. Petro said he would be willing to allow civilian planes carrying deportees to land in Colombia, but not military aircraft. \u201cA migrant is not a criminal,\u201d he wrote on X.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">He did not include details about when or how many military planes and migrants had been turned away.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">It is not clear if Colombia can legally turn away its own citizens, or if or how many deportation flights it has received in the past. A representative for the president confirmed that the planes had been turned away, but did not immediately respond to other questions.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Mr. Petro\u2019s statement was in response to <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/rcnradio\/status\/1883506759610007618\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">a post<\/a> referring to reports from a local news outlet about Brazil\u2019s complaints of \u201cinhumane\u201d treatment of deported migrants stemming from a video of men seen disembarking in Brazil from a plane from the United States with their hands tied together.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The announcement comes as countries <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/01\/26\/world\/asia\/india-illegal-immigration-trump.html\" title=\"\">around the world<\/a> are grappling with how to prepare for the mass deportations of illegal immigrants that Mr. Trump has threatened.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-2\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Two military jets carrying deported migrants <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/01\/24\/us\/politics\/trump-us-guatemala-military-migrants.html\" title=\"\">landed in Guatemala City<\/a> on Friday, one of first countries to have struck an agreement with the United States to receive deported citizens transported on U.S. Air Force jets.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<p><br \/>\n<br \/><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/01\/26\/world\/americas\/colombia-us-deportation-flights.html\">Source link <\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Colombia will not accept deportation flights from the United States until the Trump administration provides a process to treat Colombian migrants with \u201cdignity and respect,\u201d the country\u2019s president, Gustavo Petro, said on Sunday in a series of posts on X.
