The Dutch police said the explosion was part of an elaborate effort to break into the acclaimed museum and steal some of its treasures, including a prized helmet made of gold on loan from Romania.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-1\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cThis is a dark day for the Drents Museum in Assen and the National History Museum of Romania in Bucharest,\u201d Harry Tupan, the director of the Drents Museum, said in a statement. \u201cWe are intensely shocked by the events last night at the museum. In its 170-year existence, there has never been such a major incident.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-2\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Among the stolen artifacts were three golden bracelets and <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ancient-origins.net\/artifacts-other-artifacts\/helmet-cotofenesti-0017556\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">the golden helmet of Cotofenesti<\/a>, an elaborately decorated, solid-gold headpiece from the fifth century B.C. The helmet, which weighs a little over two pounds, features large studs across the top of the head.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">It dates back to the ancient Dacians, who inhabited parts of the Balkan region. The helmet, which is well known in Romania and is believed to have been used in ceremonies, depicts various scenes, including someone sacrificing a lamb.<\/p>\n<div data-testid=\"imageblock-wrapper\">\n<figure class=\"img-sz-small css-1189og3 e1g7ppur0\" aria-label=\"media\" role=\"group\"><figcaption data-testid=\"photoviewer-children-caption\" class=\"css-13ytnnu ewdxa0s0\"><span class=\"css-jevhma e13ogyst0\">The golden helmet of Cotofenesti was among the artifacts stolen from the museum.<\/span><span class=\"css-14fe1uy e1z0qqy90\"><span class=\"css-1ly73wi e1tej78p0\">Credit&#8230;<\/span><span><span aria-hidden=\"false\">Dutch Police<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The helmet and several other golden artifacts were being displayed as part of a traveling exhibition from the National History Museum of Romania, and had been on display at the Drents Museum <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mnir.ro\/dacia-rijk-van-goud-en-zilver-dacia-regatul-aurului-si-argintului-la-drents-museum-din-regatul-tarilor-de-jos\/\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">since July 2024<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">While the authorities declined to attach a monetary figure to the stolen goods, <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/nltimes.nl\/2025\/01\/26\/romanian-outrage-grows-stolen-artifacts-police-release-footage\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Romanian officials have called<\/a> their value \u201cincalculable\u201d to Romania\u2019s culture.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-3\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Neither representatives from the National History Museum nor officials from the Romanian Ministry of Culture could immediately be reached on Sunday.<\/p>\n<div data-testid=\"imageblock-wrapper\">\n<figure class=\"img-sz-small css-1189og3 e1g7ppur0\" aria-label=\"media\" role=\"group\"><figcaption data-testid=\"photoviewer-children-caption\" class=\"css-13ytnnu ewdxa0s0\"><span class=\"css-jevhma e13ogyst0\">Golden bracelets were also stolen in the break-in, according to the authorities.<\/span><span class=\"css-14fe1uy e1z0qqy90\"><span class=\"css-1ly73wi e1tej78p0\">Credit&#8230;<\/span><span><span aria-hidden=\"false\">Dutch Police<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The Dutch police say they are investigating a connection between the break-in and a nearby car fire.
