The ship was escorted to the coast of Sweden for an investigation, the authorities said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cWe suspect that a serious act of sabotage was committed in the Swedish economic zone yesterday,\u201d Mats Ljungqvist, the Swedish prosecutor leading the investigation into the damage, said in a phone interview on Monday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The authorities have not yet made public the nature or the extent of the damage to the communications cable, which runs between Sweden and Latvia.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The incident follows other suspected sabotage attempts on cables under the Baltic Sea, which has recently become a theater of potential hybrid warfare between NATO and Russia.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-1\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Two weeks ago, the Atlantic alliance started a new patrol and surveillance operation to protect critical infrastructure in the sea, on which Russia has coastline, after <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/12\/26\/world\/europe\/finland-estonia-cables-russia.html\" title=\"\">a number of cables<\/a> were <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/12\/26\/world\/europe\/finland-estonia-cables-russia.html\" title=\"\">severed<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The NATO mission, called Baltic Sentry, is intended to help protect underwater cables and pipelines by enhancing the alliance\u2019s presence in the region, said Mark Rutte, the organization\u2019s secretary general. The operation involves frigates, maritime patrol aircraft, submarine satellites, remotely operated vehicles and drones.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-2\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">NATO, of which Sweden is <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/03\/07\/world\/europe\/sweden-nato-neutrality.html\" title=\"\">the newest member<\/a>, said the mission was an effort \u201cto improve the ability to protect critical undersea infrastructure and respond if required.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Alliance officials have regularly said that, while they suspect Russia of being behind the sabotage of cables and pipelines, actual responsibility is extremely difficult to prove.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-3\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The Swedish security service said a preliminary investigation suggested that the incident on Sunday may have been an effort to target Swedish interests. The seized vessel \u201cis suspected to have carried out the sabotage\u201d the security service said in <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/sakerhetspolisen.se\/ovriga-sidor\/other-languages\/english-engelska\/press-room\/news\/news\/2025-01-27-investigation-of-sabotage-incident-in-the-baltic-sea.html\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">a statement issued Monday<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cRight now, Swedish authorities are on the vessel to conduct various investigative measures,\u201d Johan Wikstrom, a spokesman for the service, said by telephone on Monday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Mr. Ljungqvist, the prosecutor, said that the seized vessel was called the Vezhen.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Navigation Maritime Bulgare, a Bulgarian shipping company that <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.navbul.com\/en\/fleet\/\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">lists the Vezhen<\/a> in its fleet as a bulk carrier with a Maltese flag, posted <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.navbul.com\/\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">a statement on its website<\/a> on Monday referring to a \u201ca force majeure situation that occurred due to the unfavorable hydrometeorological conditions in the area.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The company said it did not have \u201cinformation about any intentional actions by the crew\u201d that could lead to cable damage and expressed its support for the authorities in the investigation.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Mr. Wikstrom said the coast guard on Sunday escorted the vessel to the Swedish coast. It is now anchored outside of Karlskrona, a southern city that is home to Sweden\u2019s largest naval base and also the coast guard headquarters.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-4\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Mr. Wikstrom declined to provide other details about the seized vessel or how and where the authorities had discovered the damage to the cable.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">NATO ships and aircraft responded to the reported damage and were working with their regional allies, the alliance said on Monday in an email.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Prime Minister Evika Silina of Latvia said in <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/EvikaSilina\/status\/1883532150932484160\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">a social media post<\/a> that Latvian, Swedish and NATO authorities were working together to investigate the incident, patrol the area and inspect vessels. She added that the cable had been damaged in Sweden\u2019s economic zone and that the authorities had started a \u201ccriminal investigation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">In late December, the Finnish authorities seized an oil tanker that they suspected of cutting undersea cables, accusing the ship of being part of <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/12\/26\/world\/europe\/finland-estonia-cables-russia.html\" title=\"\">Russia\u2019s \u201cshadow fleet,\u201d<\/a> which <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/10\/03\/world\/europe\/russian-oil-tankers-gabon.html\" title=\"\">Western officials say they think<\/a> Russia uses <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/12\/28\/world\/europe\/russia-ship-shadow-fleet-finland.html\" title=\"\">to evade sanctions<\/a>. In response, NATO said it would <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/12\/27\/world\/europe\/finland-ship-russia-sabotage.html\" title=\"\">increase security<\/a> in the region and the European Union threatened new sanctions against Moscow.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">In November, several European countries halted a <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/12\/12\/world\/europe\/baltic-fiber-optic-cables-ship.html\" title=\"\">Chinese commercial ship<\/a> after two fiber-optic cables were severed. Germany\u2019s defense minister described the severing of the cables as <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/11\/19\/business\/finland-germany-cable-baltic-sea.html\" title=\"\">an act of \u201csabotage\u201d<\/a> aimed at European countries that have supported Ukraine while it <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/news-event\/ukraine-russia\" title=\"\">fights Russia<\/a>, though American intelligence authorities said they were not cut deliberately.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-5\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">In 2022, explosions damaged parts of the <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2022\/12\/26\/world\/europe\/nordstream-pipeline-explosion-russia.html\" title=\"\">Nord Stream pipeline<\/a>, stopping Russian natural gas deliveries to Western Europe.
